• Fought in the Boer War between 1899 and 1902.
• Gained the rank of Lieutenant in 1900 in the service of the 5th Lancers.
• Aide-de-Camp to the Governor-General of New Zealand between 1904 and 1907.
• Gained the rank of Captain in 1905.
• Fought in the First World War.
• Succeeded to the title of 6th Baron Clanmorris of Newbrook, co. Mayo [I., 1800] on 4 November 1916
