This is Asahel (some sources, Ashahel) Chase the elder, or Asahel Chase I, not to be confused with his son who was also named Asahel. His parents, Timothy Chase II and Sarah Newton Chase, lived first in Belchertown, MA and some records suggest that Asahel was born there. However, the parents moved to Townshend, VT, and the 1850 census records Asahel I's place of birth as Vermont, as does the "Smith Bible Records" on file in Maine NY; and also census records for his youngest son, John Henry W. Chase. On Aug 15, 1818 in Newburgh NY, Asahel I married Cornelia Ann Waters, a descendant of Princess Cantoneras of the Montauk Indians.

Cornelia was born Mar 6, 1799 in Cortlandt (Town), Westchester Co, NY, to Charles & Elizabeth Lent Waters. The children of Asahel and Cornelia were Phebe Ann, Catharine Jane, Mariah Jane, Asahel II, Catharine Cornelia (m. Jacob N. Smith), Margaret Ann, Amanda, John Henry, and John Henry W. Chase. The children were born at Montgomery, Warwick, Goshen, Newburg, and New York, NY, suggesting multiple places of residence for the family.

The 1850 Census has only Mariah still at home with Asahel and Cornelia in Maine, Broome Co NY, with Asahel being listed as a farmer and owning $400 in real estate. In the 1860 Census, Cornelia was living with youngest son, John Henry W Chase, in Plymouth, Indiana, where she died Sep 14, 1866. Asahel is a descendant of Aquila Chase, Memorial# 72431942. The lineage from Aquila to Asahel is via Daniel, #83239160 > Isaac, #153673350 > Timothy I,#153650079 > Timothy II > Asahel. FG memorials go back from Aquila several earlier generations.
