- Asta (Weiler) Martinson Obituary MARTINSON, Asta (nee Weiler) Passed away on June 7, 2011. Born in Tallinn, Estonia in 1918. She married Raimond Pakasaar in 1942 and with baby son Hendrick, fled Russian occupation to Sweden where Reet was born, and emigrated to Canada in 1948, settling in Comox where Helga was born. Asta embraced these changes with an adventurous and enterprising spirit, diligently learned English and embarked on fulfilling her ideals, and a life-long passion for learning. She studied Art History and Anthropology at the University of Estonia in Tartu, and while maintaining family life in Nanaimo, attended the University of British Columbia, receiving a Masters of Social Work (1973). Devoted to this profession, she worked in social services from 1961-1983 in Nanaimo and Victoria. Predeceased by her sister, brother, two husbands and other family, Asta is lovingly remembered by her children Helga (Robert), Hendrick, and Reet (Tony), granddaughter Nicola (Douglas) and great grandson Rheo, grandson Adrien (Aimee), nieces Merike and Sylvia, nephews Hendrick and Roland, feline companion Sally, as well as other family and friends. Asta was an important influence in many lives and will be remembered as an independent minded and generous woman, often ahead of her time, who embraced life with finesse and good humour. Her passions included gardening, a good story, new ideas, history, Bach and chocolate. A service celebrating Asta's life, followed by a reception, will be held at First Memorial Funeral Home, 1155 Fort Street, at 2 pm on Friday, June 24, 2011. In her memory, please give flowers to a friend. 629403 Published in The Times Colonist (Nanaimo, BC) on June 18, 2011 - See more at: http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/timescolonist/obituary.aspx?n=asta...
