Will: Dated 19 Apr 1613, Great Amwell, Hertfordshire, no probate date [TAG 78(2):83-86 (Ap r 2003)]. Requests burial at church or churchyard of Great Amwell. Names dau. Elizabeth Warren wife of Richard Warren, her three children Marey, Ann, and Sarey Warren. Thomas, John and Frauncis Holland, children of Thomas Holland & my daughter Ann, his wife. Unborn child "said Ann is now conceyved". Daughter Mary Johnson. Symon Adams, son of Symon Adams Citizen & draper of London. And Dorothy his daughter [a gold ring that was her mother's]. Wife Marey, executrix. Thomas Hassall, Vicar of "much Amwell" for services preaching at my funeral. Symon Adams the father, overseer of will. Mark of Augustine Walker. Sworn by Thomas Holmested, Thomas Robert & John Larke (no date of probate).

"The will of Augustine Walker of 'much' Amwell was dated 19 April 1613; there is no date of probate on the will or in the act book. It states, 'I give & bequeath unto my daughter Elizabeth Warren wife of Richard Warren Sixteene pounds of lawefull money of England, and unto her three Children Marey, Ann an Sarey Warren Fower pounds . . ' These three children have the same names and are listed in the same order as the first three children known for the immigrant Richard Warren. Since their parents were married in 1610 and they were named in their maternal grandfather's will of 1613, the dates of birth of these daughters can be stated reasonably accurately, and match very closely what is known of the dates of birth of the daughters of Richard Warren, the Mayflower passenger. (Since Richard Warren and his wife Elizabeth (Walker) had three children in three years, Elizabeth may have used wet nurses - though there are other possibilities.) It is unfortunate that the first three daughters each had a common name, unlike the rarer name Abigail, which was given to a later daughter of the immigrant."

"Richard Warren of the Mayflower was described as 'of London.' Unfortunately, Augustine Walker's will does not give Richard Warren's residence. Great Amwell, however, had clear connections with London. The parish was situated on two major routes leading from the capital city: The River Lea and the Old North Road. There re many references in the Great Amwell parish registers to people from London, including some connected with Augustine Walker himself. In 1603 Susan Addams, 'a maiden borne in Amwell dwellinge at London died heere at Augustine Wallkar's' and 'Marye surnamed Fanchurch, a child of the hopsitall in London, was buried from Augustine Wallkar's of Amwell.' Another connection is the appointment in Augustine's will of Simon Admas, citizen of London, as an overseer. Augustine Walker was buried at Great Amwell on 18 August 1614 as 'Austen Wallkar of Amwell street an owld man.' His widow Mary was buried at Great Amwell on 26 December of the same year, but she was evidently not the mother of Elizabeth (Walker) Warren. Augustine Walker and Mary Stringer were married at Great Amwell on 27 June 1597. Mary's will, dated 23 December 1614 and proved on 10 January 1614/5, does not name Augustine's children, but does refer to the 'legacies of my husband Augustine Wallkar lately deceased.' And Elizabeth, daughter of Augustine Walker, was baptized at Baldock, Hertfordshire, approximately fifteen miles from Gret Amwell, in September 1583. The children of Augustine Walker of Great Amwell mentioned in his will are: Elizabeth, wife of Richard Warren; Ann, wife of Thomas Holland; and Mary Johnson. No record of the baptisms of Ann or Mary was found in the Baldock parish registers. A Dorothy daughter of Augustine Walker, baptized there in 1573, could be the Dorothy Walker who married Edward Grave at Great Amwell in 1595. If the Elizabeth Walker baptized at Baldock was baptized soon after birth, then she would have been ninety years old in October 1673, which would fit with the age of 'aboue 90 yeares' given for the immigrant Richard Warren's widow. It is clear from the above that there are good reasons to identify the immigrants Richard Warren and his wife Elizabeth with Richard and Elizabeth (Walker) Warren. As far as is known, there is nothing inconsistent with the identification. it is hoped that those interested in the family of the Mayflower passenger will find further evidence about the the origin and ancestry of Richard Warren and his wife."

  • Many sources show this Augustine Walker as the father of Elizabeth Walker who married Richard Warren. But he is probably at least 3 years too young to father a daughter who was baptized in 1583, and probably about 20 years too young to be called an "owld man" when buried in 1614, so it seems highly unlikely this was that man.

He was buried at Great Amwell on 18 Aug 1614 as "Austen Walkar of Amwell Streete an owld man". In the will of Augustine Walker, dated April 1613, he mentions "my daughter Elizabeth Warren wife of Richard Warren", and "her three children Mary, Ann and Sarah."

[no date of probate][2] Biography Notes Name Augustine Walker.[3] Also known as: Austen Walkar of Amwell Streete.[4] Austen Wallkar.[5] Birth An Augustine Walker was born before February 22, 1564. (date baptized) Some people think Augustine Walker was the son of John Walker and Katherine Bicknell because a son Augustine Walker was baptized to them in Southam, Warwick, England on 22 Feb 1564.[6] But Augustine Walker was buried in 1614 called an "owld man" and his daughter Elizabeth (who married Richard Warren as proved by Augustine's 1613 will)[7] was baptized in 1583 which suggests he was probably born before 1560. Baptized An Augustine Walker was baptized February 22, 1564 in Southam, Warwick, England.[8] Buried His will was dated April 19, 1613, and he was buried August 18, 1614 at Great Amwell, Hertsfordshire, England.[9][10] Buried at Great Amwell on 18 Aug 1614 as "Austen Walkar of Amwell Streete an owld man".[11][12] Ancestral Notes Richard Warren's English origins and ancestry have been subject to speculation, and many different ancestries have been published about him, without much evidence to support them. However, in December 2002, Edward Davies found the missing piece of the puzzle, in a personal will. Researchers had known of the marriage of Richard Warren to Elizabeth Walker on 14 April 1610 at Great Amwell, Hertfordshire, England. Since records show the Mayflower passenger had a wife named "Elizabeth" and a first child born about 1610, this was a promising record. Yet, no children were found for this couple in the parish registers, and no further evidence beyond the names and timing, until the will of Augustine Walker was discovered. In the will of Augustine Walker, dated April 1613, he mentions "my daughter Elizabeth Warren wife of Richard Warren," and "her three Children Marey, Ann and Sarey Warren". The record shows that the Mayflower passenger's first three children were named Mary, Ann, and Sarah (in that birth order). Also, the will of the father Augustine Walker states, "my daughter Elizabeth Warren wife..." hence, the maiden name "Walker" is confirmed for "Elizabeth (Walker) Warren" as the wife of Richard Warren. Note Bartlett Society Newsletter, January 2005. "The parish registers of Great Amwell in Hertfordshire show that a Richard Warren married an Elizabeth Walker on 14 April 1610. No baptisms of any children of this couple are recorded in the Great Amwell parish registers, but the will of Elizabeth's father, Augustine Walker, shows that Richard and Elizabeth (Walker) Warren had a family that fits very well with what is known of the family of the Mayflower passenger. Our ancestress, Mary Warren's birth, has been calculated as being in 1610 or 1611, since at her death on 27 March 1683, she was said to be "in her 73d yeare." This is an excellent fit with the marriage date of Richard and Elizabeth (Walker) Warren. The will of Augustine Walker of "much" Amwell was dated 19 April 1613. The three Warren children named in this will have the same names are are listed in the same order as the first three children known to be by immigrant Richard Warren. Since their parents were married in 1610 and they were named in their maternal grandfather's will in 1613, the dates of birth of these daughters can be stated reasonably accurately, and match very closely what is known of the births of the daughters of Richard Warren, the Mayflower passenger. Augustine Walker was buried at Great Amwell on 18 August 1614 as "Austen Walker of Amwell Streete an owld man". His widow Mary was buried at Great Amwell on 26 December of the same year, but she was evidently not the mother of Elizabeth (Walker) Warren. Augustine Walker and Mary Stringer were married in Great Amwell on 27 June 1597. Mary's will, dated 23 December 1614 and proved on 10 January 1614/15, does not name Augustine's children, but does refer to the "legacies of my husband Augustine Walker lately deceased." An Elizabeth, daughter of Augustine Walker, was baptized at Baldock, Herfordshire, approximately fifteen miles from Great Amwell, in September 1583. The children of Augustine Walker of Great Amwell mentioned in his will are: Elizabeth, wife of Richard Warren; Ann, wife of Thomas Holland; and Mary Johnson. No record of the baptisms of Ann or Mary was found in the Baldock parish registers. A Dorothy, daughter of Augustine Walker, baptized there in 1573, could be the Dorothy Walker who married Edward Grave at Great Amwell in 1595. If the Elizabeth Walker baptized at Baldock, then she would have been ninety years old by October 1673, which would fit with the age of "above 90 yeares" given for the age of immigrant Richard Warren's widow at the time of her death on 2 October 1673. There is nothing inconsistent with this identification, so far as is known." Note "Richard Warren of the Mayflower was described as 'of London.' Unfortunately, Augustine Walker's will does not give Richard Warren's residence. As far as is known, there is nothing inconsistent with the identification. it is hoped that those interested in the family of the Mayflower passenger will find further evidence about the the origin and ancestry of Richard Warren and his wife." The American Genealogist Title: The American Genealogist Page: Edward J. Davies, "The Marriage of Richard Warren of the Mayflower," Vol. 78, No. 2, April, 2003

Parish Records of Great Amwell show the marriage of Augustine Walker & Mary STRINGER on 27 Jun 1597 in Great Amwell, Hertfordshire, England but there is no baptismal entry for Augustine and some researchers have suggested that he is the same Augustine Walker baptised 22 Feb 1564 in Southam, Warwickshire.Papers in the National Archives relating to the Southam Augustine show him to be a man of considerable wealth.

A tithing book dated 1597 and written by Thomas Hassall sheds some light on the history of the Amwell Walkers and indicates that Augustine Walker, was a man of substance who had property in London and settled in Gt Amwell. He appears to have been a good employer. There are entries regarding servants who were born in Amwell, lived in London and were brought back from London to be buried.

The burial of Austen Walker in 1613 corresponds with Augustine Walker's will of 1613, so often cited as the link between Elizabeth & Richard Warren. Indeed the marriage between the pair is also in this list. Mary, Augustine's wife died shortly after him.

The Tithing book Of Thomas Hassall, 1597

It is possible that the reason Augustine's daughter, Elizabeth was baptized in Baldock in 1583 might be attributed to a short stay in Baldock before settling in Amwell. Baldock Parish Records record that on 10th October 1580 before Thomas Revett, Court Baron and his Steward John Spurling at Baldock Manorial Court Session there was elected to the parish one, Augustine Walker of Baldock, Hertfordshire, as one of two Ale tasters to the Parish. This post held an important in townships and was equivalent to being the second in command of the Town Mayor. William Shakespeare's father was also an ale taster in Stratford - Upon- Avon.

Augustine had already served two years as a member of the Homagii a, jury of twelve to fifteen prominent men of the town who were householders in Baldock. Despite being previously fined in 1575 for defaulting on an (unstated) task from a previous manorial court in 1575 (4d) and neglecting to mend a fence between him and a neighbor (10s) he was duly sworn in and elected to post.

We do not know how many years Augustine held this important post of ale taster. Parish records show that Sir Thomas Revett (son of a London Mercer) did not regularly attend and the burden fell to his Steward. Records are very sparse.

Baldock was on one of the main coaching routes from London. The two settlements are only 21 miles away and from Great Amwell to The City of London is another 21 miles hence. It also has links with the Merchant Venturers who funded the Pilgrim Fathers on their journey to America from Portsmouth.
