Dr. Avrum Ben-Avi, 91, of Sarasota, formerly of New York City and and Redding, Conn., died Sept. 27, 2008. The family will be "sitting shiva" from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday. There will be no services. Survivors include his wife of 26 years, Rachel, his first wife of 34 years, Joan, and their three children, Sigrid, Jason, and Nina; four grandchildren, Julia and Emma, Alice and Sarah; sons-in-law, Reg Balmer and Marc Schreiber. He was an esteemed psychologist/psychoanalyst in private practice for some 50 years. He was professor and supervisor in both the doctoral and the postdoctoral program in psychoanalysis and psychotherapy at New York University. He started the postdoctoral program. Handsome beyond reason, brilliant and curious, witty, charming, elegant, beloved, respected and admired by all who knew him, he was the analysts' analyst. A Jew and an atheist, he studied at Yale Divinity School for eight years after he retired. An officer in World War II, he designed tests to determine who was best fit to fly bombing missions.
