About Balthasar Coyett
[Coyett, Balthasar]
COYETT(Balthasar), son of Frederik and father of Frederik Julius, who both follow, b. on Formosa, probably around 1650, died. at Batavia 19 Sept. 1725. He entered the service of the Company, in 1681 became secretary of the council of heemraden, established since 1664, charged with settling disputes about border divisions and later also with supervision of roads and bridges. In 1684 he left for Holland, was again in Batavia in 1688, where he became a council of justice as chief merchant. In 1691, 1694 and 1697, he became, respectively, second, provisional governor of Banda, and governor and director there, the same area where, as Valentine says, "his wacky father once lived as a bandit." Finally followed his appointment as governor of Ambon, in which relationship he was constantly at odds with the Native chiefs.
He was married to Constantia Pierraedt or Pieraardt , who had a ancestor Constantia Meyburgh , married to Coenraad Frederik Hoffmann van Assenheim, chief merchant and lieutenant governor of Sumatra's west coast. From Coyett's marriage sprang, except for his son Frederik Julius, see
