Biographical Notes for Banfield Capron: No records of any Caprons have been found in Cheshire, England. There are numerous Caprons in Devon and several in Somerset. Also there are several Callenders in Devon including an Elizabeth born 1661 dau. of John. Have not made positive ID on this Elizabeth but believe her to be Banfield's wife. Therefore I believe the Holden book to be wrong in stating Banfield was from "...the north of England near Wales." and a more accurate statement to be "...the north of Devon(shire) near Wales."

He married Elizabeth Callender, daughter of John Callender, in December 1680. Banfield Capron married Elizabeth Blackington circa 1733. Banfield Capron married Sarah Norton on 16 December 1735 in Attleboro, Bristol, Massachusetts.

Banfield came to America with three other youths as stowaways. Against policy, the captain and crew of the ship, allowed the four to stay in New England after their discovery.

Banfeild, also spelled Banfield or Bainfield, Capron was born about 1660. He died 20 August 1752 (aged 92) in Attleboro, Bristol County, Massachusetts, United States. (His will was probated 13 October 1752) He married Elizabeth Callender about 1680 per bio in Find A GRAVE.[1]

On 16 Dec 1735, Banfeild, age 75 married a second time to Sarah Daggett in Attleboro, Bristol, Massachusetts Bay, British Colonial America. [2]

In his will dated, 8 April 1747 Bainfield [Banfield] of Attleborough, County of Bristol, Province of Massachusetts Bay, New England names his wife Sarah, son Jonathon Capron, as executor, Banfield Capron, children of son, John Capron, son, Joseph Capron, son Edward, son, Walter, daughters, Elizabeth Elizabeth Brown, Hannah Aldrich [?deceased], Mary Tiler, children of daughter Margaret Arnold, Daughter Sarah Freeman, my daughter [daughter-in-law] Rebecka, my son Jonathon's wife, Grandson Benjamin Capron son of Jonathon.

Note

Eleanor Capron is likely not the daughter of Banfield Capron and Elizabeth. There is no birth record of her parentage. Apparently Eleanor was born in 1777 three years before Banfield and Elizabeth married. She is also not mentioned in Banfield Capron's will.

Research Notes

"Let it be remembered, that Banfield Capron was the only Capron, that we have any account of, that came from Old England and settled in New England. From him, we believe, descended all the Capons that have been, or now (1817) are, in the United States of America.

He came from England in a singular manner. He with three other youths, each about 14 years old, and all schoolmates, mutually agreed to leave their native land, their relations, and friends, and everything that was near and dear to them, and go over to New England, (or Columbus? New World, as it was then frequently called.) They knew of a vessel that was going to New England; and the night before it sailed, they concealed themselves in the hold of the vessel, with a small matter of provision to live on a few days. The vessel sailed the next morning. After they had been to sea a few days there was a strange noise heard from the hold. The hatchway was opened, and those four lads came upon deck, to the surprise of all the ship's crew. The captain said he must return with them, for it was against the law for any captain of a vessel to transport any of the inhabitants of England to America except they got a license to go there. But both of the mates, and all the ship's crew, thought it best to proceed on, and not return back; and the captain finally fell in with their opinion, and brought them all safe to New England.

It may at first appear very strange that those four youths should leave their native land, and their relations &c., and come over to New England. But when we take into consideration the troubles and, calamities the people of England experienced during the time they lived there and for many years before; such as the persecutions for religious tenets; the civil wars; beheading their king; the subversion of the government; the plague which swept off nearly 70,000 of the inhabitants in a short time; the great fire, which in four days burnt over 436 acres of the city of London, consuming 13,200 dwelling houses, 89 churches, and all the other public and private buildings thereon; almost a continued war with the Dutch from the time of their birth till their departure; the rebellions in Scotland, &c.; when these things are taken into consideration it will not appear so very strange. And perhaps there were hundreds, if not thousands, of others that would gladly have availed themselves of a like opportunity. History informs us that Oliver Cromwell and others were shipped on board of a vessel to come to America, but were prevented because they could not obtain licenses.

The name of the town or county that the said Banfield came from is forgotten; but it has been kept in remembrance, that he came from the northerly part of

England, and that the town joined Wales. By examining the map of England, I find that the county of Flint is the most northerly in Wales, bordering on the sea; that the county of Cheshire joins it; that the river Dee runs between them and empties unto the sea near the town of Chester, which is the largest town in the county of Cheshire, and the only seaport town that joins Wales in the northerly part of England. From these circumstances it is reasonable to conclude, that the town of Chester was the native place of the said Banfield.
I have not obtained any information where the said Banfield lived for several years after he came to New England, or what his business was; but, soon after he came over, a family by the name of Callender, with whom he was acquainted in England, came over and settled in Rehoboth, who are said to have been a very respectable family, and in affluent circumstances."
