REFLECTIONS
We have all been fortunate enough to know our mother, and we have known that she had a passion for life. In the 91 years that she lived with us in this life, she touched many lives with her goodness and love.
We all have different recollections of ‘special times' with mom. Connie recalls a game of pool that she played with mom in Seattle "just for fun." Mom enjoyed playing games and she liked to win. I don't know if she ever played pool before but she beat Connie. Connie says mom would strike the ball with the cue ever so softly and hit the object ball just right so that the ball would roll ever so slowly until it dropped in the pocket. Mom would win at games as often as she would lose but win or lose she always had a smile on her face. She wouldn't gloat or brag. When playing cribbage, she would often skunk her opponent. Others might start bragging about a possible skunk as soon as they were on the final leg but mom would always wait until the skunk was well in hand and then she would say in a soft and gentle voice "I smell something stinky."
Mom enjoyed going to the Gear cabin up north. Whenever she was asked to go, she would whip up a bowl of potato salad. Mom was famous for her potato salad. If Rita were going to be there, she would make a second bowl----without onions.
Mom loved fishing at the cabin. Sandy says that mom looked a little comical at times. Mom took the meaning of protection from sun's harmful radiation to a new level. She would wear her wide brim hat, long sleeves and slacks with only her hands showing. She would glob on the Sunscreen so thick that her hands looked white. She would sit on the dock all day fishing in this get up. Lore and Rita said that she looked hilarious. But she caught fish. A familiar refrain heard all day long was, "Is it a keeper." Whenever mom caught something whether a fish or sometimes a turtle, she would yell out "is it a keeper" no matter what the size.
You know, mom was pretty frugal. If you knew mom at all, you would know that this is an understatement. Mom is the only person I know she would get airlines miles by charging stamps on a credit card at the Post Office. I took my mom to the grocery store once on Double Coupon Day and she walked out of the store with a basket of groceries and more cash than she went in with. I think that living through the Depression and raising eight kids on prayer and promise created a "never give up" spirit, a fighter attitude that carried her through the good times and the bad. She just could not be beaten down no matter what the circumstances.
Dad used to always do the income taxes. One year dad got audited and they had to pay a penalty for a mistake that dad made. From that time on mom did the taxes. One year, the IRS accused her of making an error. She argued her case and pointed out the error was an IRS error. She received a Letter of Apology from the IRS.
God's Greatest Gift to a woman is children. A mother's greatest gift to her children is LOVE. Mom loved and cared for her family all the days of her life. Her family was not limited to the children she bore but included their spouses, their children and their children's children. She treated everyone as her own. Mom always remembered Birthdays, Anniversaries, or Special Occasions with a card, a note and a check. I never realized until I took over mom's finances how many checks she wrote to everyone in her family on those special occasions.
We will miss you MOM. As you leave us behind with special memories, we look forward to the day when we will all be together again in that mansion in the sky.
