From Scotland's People - Deaths
1893 death of Laurence Hill Watson, [Mother's maiden name] Hill, aged 41 [born about 1852], registered district: Partick
At the Eglinton meet in Ayrshire yesterday afternoon, Thursday, 26 January 1893, a very bad accident happened to a Glasgow accountant, Mr Laurence Watson. His horse attempted to take a "double" in one jump instead of two, with the result that the animal landed on the bank and tumbled over. Mr Watson came down on his head, was badly hurt, and had his spine injured. He was removed, and is in a critical state.
Telegraphing this afternoon our Glasgow correspondent says: Mr Watson died to-day. The lower part his body was completely paralysed, and he was unconscious from six this morning until noon, when he succumbed. He was 40 years of age and unmarried.

Mr. Laurence H. Watson, of Glasgow, while attempting to take a double in one jump the Eglinton Hunt yesterday, was thrown over his horse's head and sustained such serious injuries to his spine that he died this morning. Eglinton Castle, Kilwinning, North Ayrshire KA13 7QA 55.641778, -4.671639
We did not meet on Saturday, 28 January 1893 owing to the sad and sudden death of Mr Laurence Hill Watson on Thursday last, 26 January 1893, when following Lord Eglinton's hounds. The melancholy news occasioned universal regret. Yesterday, as it seemed, we knew him as an accomplished sportsman, who rode always to the front with consummate judgment, yet with unfaltering intrepidity; to-day we mourn his removal while still in the prime of life and its joyous activities. It may be mentioned that Mr James Hill, a cousin of Mr Watson, met his death through a similar accident in the hunting field three or four years ago. Mr Hill was acting as steward. Galloping over the field where the point-to-point race takes place at Houston, and taking a water jump (a single ditch), the horse cast its rider, who fell heavily on his head.
