Barend (80), a philanthropist, living at Protea Retirement Village in Lyttleton Manor, was found murdered in his garage on 24th May 2002. He had been bludgeoned, possibly with a wheel-spanner, which was found next to his body.
Ben Pienaar, security head at the village said that a Mr. Van Staden had signed in at the security gate that night at around 19h30, who claimed to be a relative and wanted to borrow money to fix his car. "Just after 21:00, the man signed out again and told the guards his relation could not lend him money for his car troubles," said Pienaar.
