Baring was the second son of Sir Francis Baring, 1st Baronet, and of Harriet, daughter of William Herring. His grandfather, John Baring (1697–1748), emigrated from Germany and established the family in England.
Baron Alexander Baring was born in 1774. His parents were Sir Francis Baring, 1st Baronet Baring of Larkbeer and Harriet Baring. He was a 1st Baron Ashburton, President of the Board of Trade Treasurer to the navy.
Alexander married Anne Louisa Baring, Baroness Ashburton (Bingham) on August 23, 1798. Together they had the following children:
- Bingham Baring, 2nd Baron Ashburton;
- Francis Baring, 3rd Baron Ashburton;
- Harriet Thynne, Marchioness of Bath;
- Anne Eugenia St John-Mildmay.
He died in 1848.
