Joan was the daughter of John de Northwood, 3rd Baron and Joan Hert. She married first Roger de Scales, 4th Lord Scales (who died December 25, 1386). They had one son Robert de Scales. Joan married as her second husband Sir, Edmund de Thorpe, son of Edmund de Thorpe, 4th Baron and Joan Baynard around 1388. They had two daughters Isabel and Joan
