Bartholomew Kindred arrived from England, via France in 1774, and lived on the land of Thomas Jefferson, Albemarle County, Virginia. Bartholomew Kindred

"Bartholomew Kindred (? - 1805) worked as a weaver for Thomas Jefferson during the American Revolution. Kindred and his wife Mary had a son Thomas, who was a waterman. Bartholomew Kindred is mentioned a number of times in Jefferson's Memorandum Books. Some entries deal with supplies Jefferson provided to Kindred while he worked at Monticello between 1776 and 1782 (beef, bacon, corn, wheat); there are also references to what Kindred owed at Jefferson's blacksmith shop. There are also three references to Thomas Kindred: payments for fish and for transporting molasses, brandy, and furniture up from Richmond."

The Kindred and Ramey families sailed away from the shores of France in search of the larger freedom of the States. Both grandfathers coming from England
across the Channel in order to escape the law, punishable by death, should any tradesman emigrate from English shores. Those were the days when the loss of the colonies rested heavily upon the mother country and she naturally resented the passing from the realm of those skilled in the crafts or arts and whose emigration would rebound to the credit of the lost country across the sea. our of their sons, William, Edward, Thomas and Bartholomew were privates from Virginia during the Revolutionary War and all four were at Yorktown when Cornwallis surrendered. William was also with Washington at Valley Forge. Edward and William were both Baptist ministers.

Bartholomew Kindred's Will

I Bartholomew Kindred, of Saint Annis Parish, and County of Albemarle, do make this following Testamentary disposition of all my Estate, both real, and personal. It is my will and I do hereby direct that before any distribution of my Estate is made, all my just debts shall be paid. To my wife, Mary, I give my Estate borth real and personal during her life: and after decease, I lease my son Thomas Kindred, and Nancy his wife during their lives, one hundred acres of land where I now live; beginning on William Henderson line, so as to cross my lower field at the spring above the Crab Apple tree, and a straight line to the road; and after their decease, I give the said hundred acres of land to his son Thomas Kindred Jr. and his heirs forever. To my Son William Kindred and Mildred Powers (wife of Norbourn Powers) and their heirs, I give Fifty acres of Lane, to be equally divided between them forever: Beginning on the said Henderson line, and running to the road the South east Side, so as to make Fifty acre. I also give Mildred Powers one Feather Bed stead, and furniture with things heretofore given. To my grandson Edward Kindred I give thirty Acres of land and to Josiah his Brother, the balance of my Estate I wish to be sold, and the money equally divided amongst, William Kindred, Edward Kindred, Bartholomew Kindred, Thomas Kindred, Jean Ball, Mildred Powers, and their heirs forever. I constitute my friends, Samuel Backsdale and Norbourn Powers, Executors to this my last will and testament.

Bartholomew Kindred, Sr. remained in Albermarle County, Virginia where he died, but his sons all migrated west after the war. Bartholomew, Jr. settled in Jessamine County, Kentucky; William and Edward marrried sisters, daughters of Nathaniel Haggard and Elizabeth Gentry and with the Haggards and Gentrys moved to Clark County, Kentucky about 1788 or 1789. William and Mary Kindred later settled on Red Lick Creek in southeastern Madison County, Thomas Kindred stayed in Albemarle County until 1807 when he went to Tennessee, settling first in Roane County and later in Morgan
County.
