About Basina I of the Thüringians

Chlodio's wife is not named in any contemporary or near contemporary source. She was still anonymous as late as the 7th century. Her name and relationships appear to have entered the genealogical tradition in recent times. Modern compilations variously identify her either as Basina or as Siegse.

As "Basina" there is no historical record of her. She seems to be a duplication of the historically documented Basina who married her supposed grandson Childéric. This Basina might be an invention to resolve chronological problems with the Thüringian descent.

As "Siegse" she is mentioned in modern re-tellings of the story of her son's conception. In the original source she is not named:

"It is said that when Chlodio was staying with his [unnamed] wife on the sea shore in the summer, his wife went to the water to bathe at noon, and a beast of Neptune resembling the Quinotaur [recte Minotaur] (bestea Neptuni Quinotauri similis) sought her out. As she conceived right away, either by the beast or by her husband, she afterwards gave birth to a son called Merovech, after whom the kings of the Franks were later called Merovingians." Fredegar, Chronicles 3.9 (7th century).

Unsourced assertion anonymously rebutted:

Was asserted as having come from "Wittenberg". This appears to be some sort of very poorly researched assertion based on the town's proximity to traditional Thuringia. Wittenberg didn't come into existence for another seven centuries following this individual's death.

(This is a good illustration of why reliance on modern place-names alone, without identifying the place-names that were contemporary to the individual involved, is generally a bad practice.)
