Levy, Benjamin Wolfe (Benn) (1851–1908) from Maitland Weekly Mercury (NSW)

The death is announced of Mr. Benn Wolfe Levy, formerly of New South Wales.

The late Mr. Benn Wolfe Levy was the eldest son of the late Mr. L. W. Levy, M.L.C. He was born at Tamworth 57 years ago, and married Zara, the oldest daughter of David Cohen. In 1887 Mr Levy went to London as managing partner for the firm of David Cohen and Co., merchants, of Sydney and Newcastle. He also devoted a good deal of his time in London to the distribution of the David Lewis Trust, which consisted of over a quarter of a million of money, and an accumulated sum of three or four hundred pounds, to be distributed amongst charities in Liverpool and Manchester. The fountain which stands in the Botanic Gardens in Sydney was erected by Mr. Levy and his brothers and sisters in memory of their father. Mr. Levy was very popular, particularly amongst Australians in London. He was a director of the London branch of the Commercial Banking Company of Sydney.

News of the death of the late Mr. Levy will be received with regret by a large circle of friends and acquaintances in Maitland and the northern district. For many years he was resident manager of the firm's business in West Maitland, and his geniality and charitable nature made him a great favourite with all who came in contact with him. He took a great interest in all public matters during his long residence in Maitland, particularly in the School of Arts, the Hospital, and the Benevolent Asylum, whilst he also played an active part in political and social matters. He erected the fine residence in Regent-street, known as 'Cintra,' where he lived many years, and, on the whole, was an excellent and progressive townsman, whose departure for England was looked upon as a great loss to the town and district.
