About Benjamin Branch, (II) of Chesterfield

John W. Pritchett writes in "The Virginians":

Benjamin Branch II [3324.3.1] (c.1698-1762) chose his maternal uncle Edward Osborne his guardian April 1712. He married first Mary Osborne and they were the parents of at least Mary and Martha named in the 1730-will of her father, Thomas Osborne.

Benjamin married second Obedience Turpin, the daughter of Obedience Branch and her third husband, Thomas Turpin. All of Benjamin's younger children appear to be children of Obedience. Henrico County taxed Benjamin on six levies and 300 acres in 1736.  Benjamin secured a patent to 623 acres in Henrico (now Chesterfield) County in 1739,  and got 127 acres on Sappony Creek from Evan Owen in April 1750.

This Benjamin Branch had land on Knibbs Creek in Amelia County as early as 1738 but apparently never lived in the county. When two of Benjamin's slaves there stole a hog from Edward Booker in 1742, Amelia County ordered thirty-nine lashes on their bare backs at the public whipping post.  One slave's insolence would have earned him a year in jail if Branch had not put up a security bond. Another slave, Pompeii, ran off and Abraham Hurt, who caught him, made a public claim in August 1744.

In 1756 Chesterfield County listed Benjamin on its tithable list with Thomas and Edward Branch and fifteen slaves.

Benjamin Branch left a will in Chesterfield County (will dated 31 Dec. 1760,  recorded 5 Nov. 1762 ).
