Biography

Name

His full name was Benjamin Carpenter.[1][2][3]

Birth

Benjamin was born to Joseph and Margaret Sutton Carpenter in Rehoboth on January 15, 1657/8.[4][1] [5] [6]

Note: The following source was correct on the date but incorrect on birthplace: Benjamin Carpenter was born 19 Jan 1657/58 in Swansea, Massachusetts, the son of Joseph Carpenter[7] and Margaret Sutton.

Parentage

He was the son of Joseph Carpenter.[1]

Benjamin Carpenter was the son of Margaret (Sutton) Carpenter and grandson of John Sutton. There is a belief that John Sutton was the son of a Henry Sutton and grandson of a Theron Sutton. [2]

Benjamin Carpenter's parents were Joseph Carpenter (1634 - 1675) and Margaret Sutton (1635 - 1676)[3] and were married on November 25, 1655 in Rehoboth, Bristol County, Plymouth Colony.[8]

Siblings

Benjamin Carpenter had 4 brothers and 5 sisters.

Joseph Carpenter (1656 - 1718)[3]
Benjamin Carpenter (1658 - 1727)[3]
Abigail Carpenter
Ester Carpenter
Martha Carpenter
John Carpenter
Hannah Carpenter
Solomon Carpenter
Margaret Carpenter
1680 First Marriage to Renew Weeks

Benjamin married Renew Weeks of Dorchester, surely sometime before the birth of their first child Benjamin in January 1680-81.[9]. "Surely" because her grandfather was Maj. General Humphrey Atherton, before whom much of Dorchester was married.

There are other sources in following:

Benjamin Carpenter married, first, Renew Weeks[3]

He married Renew Weeks 01 Jul 1683 in Dorchester, Massachusetts, the daughter of William Weeks and Elizabeth Atherton. Renew Weeks was born 12 Aug 1660 in Dorchester, Massachusetts and died 29 Jul 1703 in Rehoboth, Massachusetts.[2]

He married (first) Renew Weeks, born 1660, the daughter of William and Elizabeth Weeks of Dorchester. His wife died July 29, 1703.[1]

1706 Second Marriage to Martha (Bliss) Toogood

He married second, on Nov 27, 1706, Martha (Bliss) Toogood, the daughter of Jonathan Bliss and Rachel (Puffer) Bliss, and the widow of Nathaniel Toogood.[3]

He married (second) November 27, 1706, Martha Toogood, who was living in 1727.[1]

Martha Bliss Toogood Carpenter (1663 - 1735)[3]

Children

Benjamin and Renew (Weeks) Carpenter had the following children, all born at Swansea. [1][10]

Benjamin Carpenter, born 27 Jun 1680 in Swansea, Massachusetts.[1] Benjamin Carpenter (1680 - 1727)[3] died 22 May 1727 in Ashford, Connecticut.
Jotham Carpenter or Jonathan Carpenter[2] born 01 Jun 1682 in Swansea, Massachusetts.[1] Jotham Carpenter (1682 - 1760)[3] died 14 Aug 1760 in Rehoboth, Massachusetts.
Renew Carpenter, born 14 Apr 1684 in Swansea, Massachusetts[2] or April 4, 1684[1] and died 4 Dec 1731 in Swansea, Massachusetts. She married John West 4 Dec 1703 in Swansea, Massachusetts. He was born 28 Mar 1679, Swansea, Massachusetts and died 1726 in Swansea, Massachusetts.[2]
Elizabeth Carpenter, born 28 Feb 1684/85 or 1685-86[1] in Swansea, Massachusetts, and died 1759 in Swansea, Massachusetts. She married a Winslow.[3]
Hannah Carpenter, born 03 May 1688 in Swansea, Massachusetts[1] and died 20 Oct 1768 in Swansea, Massachusetts.[2]
Jane Carpenter, born 31 Mar 1690 in Swansea, Massachusetts[1] and died 2 months later, 15 Jun 1690 in Swansea, Massachusetts.
John Carpenter, born 25 Mar 1691-2 in Swansea, Massachusetts and died 1766 in Stafford, Connecticut.[1]
Submit Carpenter, born 22 Jun 1693 in Swansea, Massachusetts[1] and died 09 Feb 1740/41 in Swansea, Massachusetts. She married a Pierce.[3]
Job Carpenter, born 16 Mar 1695/96 in Swansea, Massachusetts [1] and died 09 Feb 1713/14.[3]
Kesiah (or Keziah) Carpenter, born 26 Mar 1697 in Swansea, Massachusetts[1] and died 26 Aug 1763 in Rehoboth, Massachusetts. She married first, a Horton, second, a Barney, and third, a Harkin. [3]
Hezekiah Carpenter, born 27 Mar 1699 in Swansea, Massachusetts[1] and died 19 Mar 1749/50.
Edward Swanzey Carpenter, born 08 Dec 1700 [1]in Swansea, Massachusetts and died 12 Dec 1778 in Swansea, Massachusetts.[3]
1727 Death

He died May 22, 1727 in Swansea, Bristol County, Massachusetts. [3][2][1]

He was buried in the Knockum Hill Cemetery, Barrington, Bristol County, Rhode Island.[3]

The probate record of Renew's father Benjamin Carpenter, division of land was made 20 December 1727. The seventh portion of the division was granted to "Renew West: survivours",[11] This not only proves that the Renew Carpenter who married John West was the daughter of Benjamin, but also that Renew Carpenter had died prior to the 20 December 1727 probate.
