Note fm Laura Davis Bauer laubau@uswest.net. http://community-1.webtv.net/neldabuchanan/DYKES0/index.html 2/22/00 Benjamin Franklin DYKES was my great great grandfather. Benjamin DYKES (spelled Dikes in the census book) was Mellie's grandfather. He was born in the Orangeburg District of South Carolina in 1781, but was living in Jasper county MS by the 1830's. His oldest son (Mellie's father) Benjamin Franklin DYKES, Sr. was born in MS in 1835. He was in Company F, 7th Batallion, MS Infantry during the Civil War. A farmer, he sometimes went AWOL when he had to go home to plant or harvest the crops. This was not an uncommon practice. His only brother, George Washington DYKES, was also in Company F, but was killed early in the war. Frances Melvina DYKES (Big Mama) known as "Mellie" or "Mel" was born in MS in 1869 and married William Thomas "Tom" JOHNSTON (Big Dad) in 1887. They moved in the early 1890's to Pelican, LA. After the Civil War many of their relatives and neighbors had already begun the move west from Jasper and Jones Counties to the Pelican area. A group of these people most of whom were related, were known as the "Mississippi Settlement" community. Some of these early settlers were Blackwells, Davises, Johnikens, Raborns, Rishers, and WELBORNS among others. Tom JOHNSTON was a cotton farmer and owned quite a bit of property and cattle. When the oil and gas boom hit Pelican about 1915, he and his sons hauled oilfield equipment. An oil company drilled a well on the property, but only hit gas and abandoned the well. Mellie JOHNSTON raised her family, never learning to read or write. She could count money though. After her husband died of Parkinsons Disease in 1939, she continued to live in Pelican. Her son, Luther, lived next door and looked after her, later moving her into his own home. She died in 1960 at the age of 91. Permelia GUNTER (Mellie's mother) was the daugher of Elizabeth of South Carolina (b 1808) and Allen GUNTER of South Carolina (b 1798). She was born in Smith County, MS in 1835. Her first child was born in 1855 and her last in 1876. She died sometime between 1876 and 1894 because her husband, B. F. DYKES, Sr. married Savilia Anderson "Sis" in Aug 1894. B. F. DYKES, Sr moved to Pelican where he lived with his daughter, Mellie and her family for several years before his death. They added a room onto the house for him in the front by the porch. He spent a lot of time on that porch with his rocker and his chewing tobacco. He was known as "Pap". Laura Davis Bauer laubau@uswest.net Posted by: Kim Powers Date: July 31, 1998 at 17:43:49
