Benjamin Prescott was born January 4, 1696, in Groton, Middlesex county, Massachusetts. On June 11, 1718, Benjamin married Abigail Oliver of Cambridge. Benjamin and Abigail were the parents of a dozen children, including Col. William Prescott, who commanded the American forces at the Battle of Bunker Hill.
Benjamin died August 3, 1738, at the age of 42 years, in Groton, and is buried in the "Old Burying Ground." Groton's first settlers chose the corner of the current Hollis and School Streets for their second meetinghouse in 1678. While the location of the church was changed in 1714, the Old Burial Ground remained at the original site and was the sole public place of burial in the town until 1847. The inscription on his headstone reads:
Here Lies Buried Ye Body of Ye Honourable Coll Benjamin Prescott Esq'r, Who Departed this Life August Ye 3rd Anno Dom 1738 Age 42 Years, 7 m. & 30 D.
