Bernard Berl Reif

Bernard Reif would have been in the generation of men who had to take surnames in early 1790s following the edicts of Emperor Joseph II about Jewish life. His daughter's 1787 birth record in Ostroh shows no surname.

Bernard Reif appears as Uhersky Ostroh Familiant No. 7, age 36, with a death date of August 26, 1807. (The list's preface states that the content is confirmed as of November 1790; the document was signed in 1798. Bernard Reif b. 1762 was 36 in 1798.) Occupation: Brandweinbrauer. Perhaps his products included slivovitz, the plum brandy made for generations in the wine-making region that is Southern Moravia (from fermented damson plums, at 40-55% alcohol).

Uhersky-Ostroh Births (Index listing his children's births) shows that Bernard lived in Haus No. 17 from at least 1792 through 1806.

The death of Bernard Reif, age 45, on Aug. 27, 1807 (b. ~1862) is in "Czech Jewish Registers," Uhersky Ostroh Marriages [O] 1784-1830, which also includes Births and Deaths, Image #90/113, right side.
