Bertha M Smith

Census record and burial record confirm May-June 1877 birth. It is deduced that Bertha is actually Eleanor's child born out of wedlock, but she is brought up by her grandparents, who give an alternative name (Ann) for Mary Ann as her mother, with a later birth date to make it plausible in the 1880 Census.

Bertha is shown here as child of Eli and "Ann(ie)", but other information suggests that she is actually Eleanor's child, born out of wedlock. There's a second 1880 Census record showing just Eli and "Ann" (see Eli's records) with a different address, but it is later shown that "Ann" is actually Mary Ann Hart, wife of Eli, who is actually much older by this time so her real age would not have shown her as a plausible mother to Bertha.
