S.T.D. Son of Rev. Lewis David de Schweinitz, and himself one of the most able and influential leaders of the Moravian Church in recent times. After completing his theological studies in Germany, and serving for some years as a teacher, he became pastor of the church at Lebanon, and in 1853 of the first church in Philadelphia. At the same time he edited the new Church paper, The Moravian, and for a while served as Professor of Theology.
Career
Theology Moravian Seminary, Philadelphia, 1855. 1st editor of Moravian, (weekly church paper) 1856-1866. Delegate from United States to Synod in Saxony, Germany, 1857.
In charge of church, Lititz, Pennsylvania, during the U.S. Civil War. Transferred to Bethlehem, 1864-1880. President Theological Seminary at Bethlehem, 1867-1884.
Elevated to Episcopate, 1870. President General Synod, Saxony, 1879. Active in work of Moravian Missionary Society.
He first married to Lydia de Tschirschky, who died in 1866, and again to Isabella A. Boggs of the Young Ladies' Seminary.

De Schweinitz was born at Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and studied theology at the Moravian College there and at Berlin. He entered the ministry in 1850 and after some years of pastoral life, became in 1870 Bishop of the Moravian Church. He founded the Moravian, the weekly journal of his Church, in 1856 and for 10 years was its editor. He was the author of:

- The Moravian Episcopate (1865)
- The Life and Times of David Zeisberger (1870)
- Some of the Fathers of the Moravian Church (1881)
- The History of the Church Known as the Unitas Fratrum; or, The Unity of the Brethren, Founded by the Followers of John Hus (1885)
