Lewellyn Garrish Estes of Maine First Sergeant, Troop A, 1st Maine Cavalry, 19 October 1861 First Lietuenant, 4 March 1862 Captain, 1 August 1863 Major, Assistant Adjutant General of U.S. Volunteers, 1 February 1865 Breveted Lieutenant Colonel and Colonel, U. S. Volunteers, 13 March 1865, for gallant and meritorious service during the campaign in Georgia and the Carolinas Beveted Brigadier General, U. S. Volunteers, 13 March 1865, for faithful and meritorious service in the war

Awarded the Medal of Honor, 28 August 1894, for having voluntarily led troops in a charge over a burning bridge at Flint River, Georgia, 30 August 1864 Honorably mustered out, 29 September 1865

Born at Oldtown, Maine, on December 27, 1843, he earned the Medal of Honor during the Civil War while serving as Captain and Assistant Adjutant General, United States Volunteers, at Flint River, Georgia, on August 30, 1864. The Medal was actually issued to him on August 29, 1894.

He served as First Sergeant, Company A, 1st Maine Volunteer Cavalry, October 19, 1861; First Lieutenant, March 24, 1862; Captain, August 1, 1863; Captain and Assistant Adjutant General of Volunteers, September 4, 1863; Major, Assistant Adjutant General of Volunteers, February 2, 1865. He was breveted Brigadier General, United States Volunteers, for war service and specifically for the Carolinas and Georgia campaigns.

He died on February 1, 1905 and was buried in Section 3 Grave 1437) of Arlington National Cemetery.

His wife, Julia Whiting Estes (1842-1912), is buried with him.
