Brian (65), and his partner, Eduan Naude (82), ran the famous Gramadoelas Restaurant in the Market Theatre. It was established in 1967, the restaurant served traditional African cuisine - from local game to Cape Malay curries - and frequented by local and international celebrities.
In mid June, when they returned to their home, Clarendon Court, in Hillbrow, they were attacked by four armed men. One of the men forced Naudé to the ground, holding him at gunpoint as the others kicked and beat Shalkoff until he was unconscious. Shalkoff was taken to Milpark hospital with internal and external injuries.
Shalkof was treated for his extensive injuries at Milpark Hospital, but was taken off life support on Monday 1 July 2013, after doctors told the family there was no longer any chance of recovery.
The only items stolen were laptops, cellphones and some cash. Investigators have yet to make any arrests after the attack, but Naudé said that his partner had received verbal and SMS threats from a former contractor who worked on the building that previously housed their restaurant.
Investigating officer Captain Palani Appalraju said that while police were pursuing the threats as a possible lead, they had other avenues to probe.
Shalkof and Naudé are stalwarts of the restaurant industry and have run Gramadoelas since it opened in 1967. The restaurant started out in Hillbrow, then spent 10 years in Joubert Park before moving to the Market Theatre in Newtown.
“It’s an institution,” said Eat Out editor Abigail Donelly, paying tribute to Brian. “Gramadoelas has always been the place for local food, from mopane worms and melkkos to liver and onions and curry. Brian and Eduan are very respected in the industry; they’ve stuck it out through thick and thin.”
The name of their restaurant came from Naude. When he was young, his Afrikaans parents had English-speaking friends whose favourite, if not only, Afrikaans word was "gramadoelas".
