Gen. David Heap was a graduate of the U. S. Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1864. A summary career biography of him is given in entry #2026 in Cullum's Biographical Register of the Graduates of the Military Academy; it is online at http://bit.ly/Cullum2026 and contains a good deal of information (including his birthdate). The obituary mentioned there, in the 1911 AOG Report, doesn't say much that isn't already in the Cullum's Register entry, except that it narrows down his birthplace to "San Stefano, Turkey", which seems to be a neighborhood of Istanbul.
The Cullum entry cites a book he published on lighthouses; it's online at GoogleBooks.
