US Army Brigadier General, US Congressman. Born in Botetourt, Virginia, he was a successful lawyer in practice when he was elected a member of the State Senate of Virginia in 1783. In 1793, he was elected as a Republican to the Third Congress, reelected to the Fourth Congress, serving until 1797, when he declined to be a candidate for re-nomination. Resuming the practice of law, he was elected a member of the Virginia State House of Delegates, serving (1812-14). With the advent the War of 1812, he was commissioned a Colonel in the Virginia Volunteers and was later promoted a US Army Brigadier General. After the war, he served in the Virginia State Senate, (1816-20). He died at age 70 in Columbia, South Carolina. Francis Preston (August 2, 1765 – May 26, 1836) was an American lawyer and politician from Abingdon, Virginia. He served in both houses of the state legislature and represented Virginia in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1793 to 1797.

Preston had a house built in Abingdon, now used as an Inn, called The Martha Washington Inn.

Preston was the father of William Campbell Preston and John S. Preston and the uncle of William Ballard Preston and William Preston.

PRESTON, Francis, (father of William Campbell Preston and uncle of William Ballard Preston and William Preston), a Representative from Virginia; born in Greenfield, Botetourt County, Va., August 2, 1765; was graduated from the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Va., in 1783; studied law; was admitted to the bar and practiced in Montgomery and Washington Counties; member of the State house of delegates in 1788 and 1789; elected to the Third Congress and reelected as a Republican to the Fourth Congress (March 4, 1793-March 3, 1797); declined to be a candidate for renomination; settled in Abingdon, Va., and resumed the practice of law; again a member of the State house of delegates 1812-1814; colonel of Volunteers in the War of 1812; served in the State senate 1816-1820; died at the home of his brother, William C. Preston, in Columbia, S.C., May 26, 1836; interment in Aspinvale Cemetery, near Seven Mile Ford, Va.
