Elizabeth Preston Madison: Born in 1762, Elizabeth was the oldest child of William and Susanna Preston's eventual 12 children. Elizabeth married William Strother Madison, a first cousin once removed of President James Madison, and settled in present-day Shawsville, Virginia.
Elizabeth was widowed at age 19 when her husband William died as a result of smallpox contracted during his military service in the Revolutionary War.
Despite this early hardship, Elizabeth went on to live a long and successful life, running her plantation and raising her two daughters, Susan and Agatha. Elizabeth died in 1837 at the age of 75, this portrait of her hangs in the dining room of her childhood home - Smithfield.
