About Brigadier General Robert Smith Todd

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=6045098

Robert Smith Todd, was a wealthy businessman with connections to many noted bluegrass politicians.

The son of a pioneer founder of Lexington, Robert was born there in February 1791. He studied at Transylvania University, became a lawyer, and, in November 1812, married Eliza Parker. Their third child, born on December 13, 1818, was the future Mary Todd Lincoln.

When the War of 1812 erupted, Todd served in the 5th Regiment, Kentucky Volunteers. He later operated a successful grocery, spent decades as clerk of the Kentucky House of Representatives, and served in the Kentucky Senate. He was actively involved in local politics, serving on the Fayette (Fiscal) Court and the Lexington City Council. He was also a bank president and cotton merchant.

In 1825, his wife died, leaving him a thirty-four-year-old widower with six children. He later married Betsy Humphreys, leading to friction between the Todd children and their new stepmother. In 1832, Todd purchased a home on Main Street in Lexington. Many of Todd’s influential friends visited there, including Henry Clay and U. S. senator John J. Crittenden.

Robert died on July 16, 1849. http://www.lrc.ky.gov/record/Moments09RS/web/Lincoln%20moments%2011...

Miss Todd, family genealogist, in 1905 sold her manuscript of the Todd family history to a publishing house in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. The history, "Todd Family based on the MS. Of Emily Todd Helm," was published in The Kittochtinny Magazine V. 1 No 1-4, Jan. - Oct. 1905. Before publication of the manuscript was completed the magazine ceased publication with Vol. 1., No 4, and Miss Helm gave the manuscripts "in the rough" to the Kentucky Historical Society.

In 1939, KHS librarian Nina M Visscher presented the Society her typewritten "TODD FAMILY copied from KITTOCHTINYY MAGAZINE, 1905. also from mss. Papers of Mrs. Emily Todd Helm". Unfortunately, an error introduced when the Kittochtinny articles were written was repeated in the Visscher compilation. The error - the misidentification of the children of John Todd -- continues to impact contemporary research of the Todd family. To prevent further propagation of this inaccuracy, the Kittochtinny-Visscher interpretation will be compared with Mrs. Helm's original handwritten entry.

RECORD:

1. Emilie and Katherine Helm , TODD & HELM FAMILY PAPERS. , http://beauproductions.com/marylincoln/biography/geneology.htm. NOTOE Emilie and Katherine protected, and often changed, ages of women in the family. Emilie’s grandmother commented that a woman’s age was a ‘changeable number," and Emilie heeded her grandmother’s advice on several occasions. Even in census records, Emilie changed her daughters’ ages. To further protect their age, Emilie listed family members by listing all the male children in their order of birth, and then listing the female children in their birth order. Here, when information is available, the lists have been changed from Emilie’s original order to placing the children in their descending order of birth. If information is not available, the lists have been left as Emilie originally wrote them. " ROBERT SMITH TODD (Levi, David, Robert, John, James) b. February 25, 1791 in Lexington, Kentucky d.
