Civil War Confederate Army Officer. He was the Chief Surgeon of the Confederate Army from 1862 to 1865. A graduate from the University of Maryland Medical School in 1829. He was the first person to perform a Caesarean operation in the United States. He worked as a physician in Fredericksburg, Virginia until the Civil War, when he was appointed as Chief Surgeon for hospitals in Richmond, Virginia.
