About Candace Selvidge

Candace was the daughter of Rev. Jason Matlock and wife, Elizabeth Hicks, who were said to have had twenty children!

Candace appears in the 1850 Polk County, TN census with husband Absalom Selvidge with seven children: Samuel, Eliza Jane, Eda H., Martha E., Lucinda, Mary M., and Lewis C. - all born in Tennessee. Her parents and several of her brothers are living nearby. They're still there in '60 with three more children, Jason, Candus and Mira (enumerator's spelling.)

There was almost a 'mass exodus' from Polk County and surrounding counties to Texas following the War Between the States, with many going to Parker County. No paper trail for Candace as far as census and death records after her departure from Polk County can be found. The only evidence of her arrival there is a picture of her with about 14 Selvidge, Matlock and related women made in 1883 which hangs in the Legends Museum there in Parker County.

'They say' that there is a marriage record for Absolom to a Sarah Pate in 1863, and a wife by the name of Sarah does appear in a census. "They' even say that Candace also remarried to a Webb.

However, this researcher has spent many hours looking for proof of a divorce, a Webb marriage, her in a census after 1860, of her death - and have come up with absolutely nothing!

Therefore, a burial here with other family member is a high possibility, so I respectfully place her memorial here, but will move it the second anyone can supply proof otherwise. With as many children as Absalom and Candace had, someone, somewhere, surely has proof of her passing and final resting place. If you do, please let us know and we will bless you for sharing!* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Dec 13 2020, 14:56:44 UTC
