About Moses Moore Matlock

In the "Confederate History of Polk County" the following account of the murder of Mose Matlock is given by A. J. Williams, author of the book. "Some time in the Spring or Summer of 1864, Mose Matlock had come home on a scout. He started back to his command in the night and was captured by a scout from the Fifth Tennessee Federal Cavalry. He was dismounted and taken down the old Federal Road into Murray County, Georgia to a man's house by the name of Bates. He was there shot in the road in front of the house, in the night. As it happened, there was no one except a young woman at home. She was afraid to go out, but slept no more. She said she heard Matlock groaning until just before daylight next morning. He died. He belonged to Co. E, Fifth TN Cavalry." (McKenzie's Fighting Fifth.)

I see no record of where Mose was buried, but considering the fairly short distance of 20 miles or so on a good Federal Road, it is most likely that he was taken home to his father. Therefore, I put his memorial here in the cemetery where his other relatives are interred. The Matlock Cemetery on his father Jason's old homeplace had not yet been established.

Mose M. is also on the official Civil War lists, as are his brothers Solomon Summey, and Abraham Haun. Solomon died in Lynchburg, Virginia and Abraham H. returned home and lived the rest of his days near his father.

Moses was married to Nancy (Pursley?) and their children were Mary Emily, James and Jason A., who all went to Texas with many other Polk families after the war. Mary's mother, Nancy Pursley is living next door in the 1850 Polk census. She also went to Texas.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Aug 22 2020, 19:16:38 UTC
