Born 21 February 1858, Litherland (Seaforth), Lancashire;

The following information concerning ordination and occupation was obtained from the Diocesan Archives, Pietermaritzburg:
1883 - ordained Deacon in England by Bishop of Chester just before travelling out to South Africa;
1883 - worked as Assistant Clergy in Pmb (Native Mission St Alban's College);
1885 - ordained Priest by Bishop Macrorie in Pietermaritzburg;
1885 - assistant Curate New Leeds and Chaplain to the Bishop;
1887 - briefly at St Faith's, Durban;
1887-1895 - Incumbent at Estcourt;
1895 - took over Enhlonhlweni Mission, 10 miles from Ladysmith. Was Supervisor of Zulu Missions between Van Reenen's Pass and Mooi River the Northern Archdeaconry. He and his family remained at Enhlonhlweni throughout the anxious time of the Boer invasion - although the Boers arrived the mission remained intact. Enhlonhlweni went from strength to strength and, by 1928, there were 105 boarders and a chapel had been built to accommodate 100 girls (when he arrived at the Mission there were 3 girls);
He pioneered St Alban's College (Wembezi Mission) outside Estcourt, and trained many catechists and evangelists who went on to serve in Natal.
"He has done 17 years good service in Pietermaritzburg, Durban, Estcourt and Enhlonhlweni" (Natal Diocesan Magazine, 1901).
"Canon Troughton is the latest accession to the Diocesan Council of the Bishop, the Cathedral Chapter. We congratulate him on his appointment, and rejoice exceedingly that this distinguished missionary to the Natives will now sit amongst the leaders of the Diocese ...... We know of no fitter person to see that it (ie Native work) is fairly represented in Diocesan Councils than Canon Troughton" (Natal Diocesan Magazine, 1901).
1913 - he was in England working on a new edition of the Zulu Prayer Book (arrived Southampton on 29 July 1913);
1918 - was made a Canon; "the best Zulu scholar of his time" (St Saviour's magazine 1918);
He was the preacher at the consecration of Bishop F S Baines in Cape Town;
1929 - retired Canon Emeritus;
1937 - died on 20 October; memorial in Vineyard magazine (Dec 1937, Diocesan Archives).
