Married before the age of 16. Captain Alexander Doniphan immigrated to Virginia from Plymouth, England in 1672 and settled in Westmoreland County. He acquired the title of Captain by virtue of a commission in the Virginia Colonial Militia. He died in 1717 leaving a will in Richmond by which he bequeathed a large estate. Among items bequeathed was mentioned a "dymond" ring, a rare item in Colonial records. he came to Virginia at the age of 18 years. From information furnished by: George H.S. King

Captain Alexander 1 DONIPHAN (1653-1717) appears prominently on the records of Westmoreland and Richmond Counties, Virginia, and also on the Maryland records. He was a merchant and considerable landholder. There is a power of attorney dated 29 July 1671 from Thomas Yeabsley of Plymouth, County of Devon, Merchant, to Alexander Doniphan of Plymouth aforesaid, merchant, to collect certain debts due said Yeabsley by Plymouth aforesaid, merchant, to collect certain debts due said Yeabsicy by Robert Slye of Maryland (Maryland Archives, Vol LX, pages 491-492). He also appears as "Alexander Doniphan merchant in Alexander Doniphan of merchant in Virginia" in the Westmoreland County, Va, records records 1671-1675 and they too indicate Captain Doniphan was a merchant in Plymouth, Devonshire, England, before he established himself in Virginia when he was about 18 years of age.

Alexander and Margaret (Mott) Doniphan had three daughters, no sons; and Alexander, Mott, and Robert Doniphan carried on the name. [not accurate: Robert Doniphan named himself first son of Alexander & Margaret Mott.

- Margaret DONIPHAN was born about 1700 in Richmond County, Virginia. Margaret married Owen DERMOTT about 1720. Margaret died before 5 Jun 1724 in King George County, Virginia.
- Elizabeth DONIPHAN was born about 1702 in Richmond County, Virginia. Elizabeth married Stephen HANSFORD about 1724 probably in King George County, Virginia were they lived.
- Anne DONIPHAN was born about 1704 in Richmond County, Virginia.

- Alexander Doniphan ll married June 17, 1745, Mary Waugh, a daughter of Joseph Waugh and his wife, Mary Crosby-Mountjoy-Mauzy, a daughter of George Crosby. She married firstly, a Mr. Mountjoy, by whom she had William Mountjoy; married secondly, Mr. Mauzy, by whom she had Peter and Elizabeth Mauzy, who married firstly, John Markham and secondly Thomas Conway. Mary Crosby Mountjoy-Mauzy married thirdly Joseph Waugh, and they had a daughter, Mary Waugh; who married Alexander Doniphan of Stafford County. Alexander and Mary Waugh Doniphan had: 1. William Doniphan, born March 20, 1742; 2. Elizabeth Doniphan, who married William Smith, in 1773. She was born April 2, 1744; 3. Anne Doniphan; 4. Alexander Doniphan, born March 12, 1759; 5. Matt Doniphan, born 1752. Of this family was the famous soldier, Col. Alexander W. Doniphan, born in Mason County, Kentucky, July 9, 1803; a son of Joseph and Anne Smith Doniphan. Joseph Doniphan came to Fort Boonesboro, Kentucky from Stafford County, Virg! inia, and taught 17 pupils during that summer. He died in 1813. *Matt Doniphan, a son of Alexander and Margaret Mott Doniphan, married ?, and had Anderson, Alexander, and other children.
- Anderson Doniphan married Magdalena Monkeith and died 1761 in King George County, Virginia; leaving Mary, Gerrard, Rosanna, Elizabeth, and Lucretia Doniphan.
