Capt. Alexander Walker

Biography

Capt. Alexander Walker was born in 1614 in Nottinghamshire, England. His parents were Samuel Thomas Walker and Elizabeth Walker. He was a Captain.

Alexander married Frances Walker in 1630 in Virginia. Together they had the following children:

1. Mary Adams;
2. Alexander Walker;
3. Frances Walker;
4. David Walker;
5. William Walker, of New Kent;
6. George Walker;
7. Elizabeth Johnson;
8. William David Walker.

He died in 1670 in St. Peter's Parish, New Kent County, Virginia.

Church of England chaplains appointed by the London Company were Presbyterians, so were most of the colonists and probably all the London Company directors who owned the colony until 1624. In fact, Presbyterian proclivities characterized much of the early colonial religious life in Virginia and other Middle Colonies long before Francis Makemie gathered pastors in 1706 to form “The Presbytery,” a feat that earned him the title of “Father of American Presbyterianism.” Church of England became Episcopal Church. So, basically this was under the Church of England until The Revolution.

A few histories of Presbyterians in Colonial America do cite the Virginia beginnings. But more accept the commonly-received wisdom. They focus on Makemie, the Scotch-Irish, and the organization of presbyteries, synods, and finally a General Assembly. So permit me, if you will, a somewhat heretical overview of Presbyterian beginnings in the British colonies. Perhaps it will help all of us to see how variegated our Reformed heritage really has been.

Thank you!---By Gay (Leonard) Brown: He married Francis Elizabeth Warren in 1644. He was the father of George Walker from 1659 to 1732. He was a Presbyterian Pastor at Old Mochar Parrish but was to close to the Quakers. They say he died & was buried at St. Peters Parrish, in New Kent County, Virginia but that is not true. The only record they have of Alexander is the birth of Mary Holt, of a "white woman" & a "mullato" man. All were probably slaves. Mary was born on 10 January 1698. Also this might be Alexander Jr. I have no birth/ death dates for Alexander, just for George. I am going to go to Williamsburg, Virginia next because many references give that as his burial place. I live there.

He was not Presbyterian at the time of his death and was excommunicated from The Church of England that controlled all records at that time in The Colonies, even for The Episcopal/ Anglican religion. He was considered undesirable, so therefore no record would be recorded. This may explain why we are not finding a probated will for him as well. Alexander was excommunicated in 1661 for having Quaker sympathies and permitting Quaker Firebrand George Keith to preach a sermon in his church. He had to leave Scotland with "other undesirables." in 1661. This document should be able to find his ex-communication criminal charge and expulsion from Scotland.

Alexander Walker, perhaps our Alexander We need to review and try to find true documentation. Rev. Alexander-Walker was minister of Old Mochar Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. Alexander was excommunicated in 1661 for having Quaker sympathies and permitting Quaker Firebrand George Keith to preach a sermon in his church. He had to leave Scotland with "other undesirables." in 1661. It was March 18, 1662, when he and (Quaker) Rice Jones purchased 94 acres in York Co.(Rice Jones m Elizabeth Walker, dau of John & Rachel Croshaw Walker.)

Rev. Alexander was the son of Rev. Samuel Walker Presbyterian minister as his father and grandfather before. Samuel was the son of Rev. John Walker, Minister of Monkegy 1630-1649. Monkegy was an estate held by Sir John Johnston of Caskieben. Rev Samuel witnessed the will of Sir John Johnston/Johnson. This was in Scotland, not The American Colonies.

Rev. John Walker was the son of Rev. John Walker living in Daviot, Scotland in 1550.

Rev. Samuel Walker, father of Rev. Alexander (sr) was acquainted with Rev. George Keith, Quaker Minister in Aberdeen, who had m into the Johnson family.

Rev. Alexander married three times, in Scotland, Frances Chichley/Chesley in VA; after Frances died, Alexander m Mary ? (the 3rd wife was probably Mary who subsequently m ? Holdcroft , Tyler Mag Vol 7 & 2 pp 15, 66).Alexander had Elizabeth by his first wife, and by Frances, 3 children that I know about: his son, Alexander, Jr., ordained and licensed to preach in VA in 1699 and minister in Surry Co (from James City), Southwark Parish, 1702-14 (VA Mag Vol 1, p 369); David; & Joseph.

Religion: Curious when this family changed from Church of England / Anglican-/Episcopalian to Presbyterians back to Episcopalian's along the lineage. We find the Birth Records of later generations at Episcopal Church Parishes or rather at one time this was one religion in the early colonies. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_Episcopal_Church_(Unit...)] There was one Church in Powhatan, Jamestown, VA it still stands.
