ID: I291 •Name: ARCHIBOLD WIGGINS •Given Name: ARCHIBOLD •Surname: WIGGINS •Suffix: 1 •Sex: M •_UID: 4776BFB029ED41D9B19F5185758898B4CBB2 •Change Date: 11 AUG 2009 •Note: D.Claypool/M.Armstrong, 4-2-99: Archibald Wiggins I was a Captain in the Hampshire Co, VA Militia in the Revolutionary War under General McIntosh. He helped to build Fort McIntosh and Fort Lawrence. This information comes from the pension papers of men who served under Capt. Wiggins in 1778. D.Claypool Research: [BO:Archibald Wiggins I :BO]purchased land in Hampshire Co, VA as early as 1772. On 10 April 1795, he traded land belonging to Josep[BO:h FLINT:BO], deceased, in Washington Co, MD and his own land in Hampshire Co, VA to Philip Pendleton of Berkeley Co, VA, for two large acerages in Kentucky. He settled in Mason Co, KY shortly thereafter as a neighbor to [IT:William Wiggins,:IT] who had settled there about 1789 from Washington Co, MD. He appears in the 1800 and 1810 Census of Mason Co KY. Mason Co, KY Will Book C, pp 220-21 The final estate settlement of Archibald I was probated after the death of the widow, mary Flint Wiggins in Record Book G, p 298, Harrison Co, KY 16 July 1852. Robertson (Co.,KY) REVIEW - Centen. Ed. [July 1971], "Most Came--Some Meet

Them," by James O. Cracraft:
"The Cracrafts, Stewarts, Wiggins, Boswells, Bucklers, and McCanns made their way into Kentucky via the Ohio River, stopping off at Maysville (Limestone). They settled at Sardis or there-abouts." ....... L.K. Leonard, "700 Ancestors," Chapter I, "Wiggins," pp. 133-34:
Wiggins is a Frankish name brought to England by the Normans. It is on record as early as 1273 in Essex and Norfolk Counties. A JOHN WIGGINS came to the colonies in 1656 and settled in Southold, NY. From there his descendants multiplied and spread to the west.
A THOMAS WIGGINS lived in Hampshire County, VA. His will date is Aug.6, 1776 and the will was probated there on 12 Feb 1778. His children (all born in Hampshire Co) were: ARCHIBOLD, b. 1744, Thomas, Comfort Sabbaret, Chris____ and Philip.

His children were: Mary Chambers, Hannah Williams, Sarah Martin, Christen Martin, Rachel Oxborn, Drusella Homes, Rutha Kernes, Elender Reeves and James Harvey Wiggins.]
ARCHIBOLD Wiggins, born in 1744, married Mary Flint of Flynt. She was born in Hampshire County, VA on 18 Jan 1748 and lived to be 99 years old. She died in Harrison Co. KY on 13 Oct 1847 and is buried in the Mt. Zion Cemetery near Oddville, KY. Her husband, Archibold lived to the age of 73 and died in Mason County on 22 Feb 1817. He is buried in the Shannon Cemetery, northeast of Mt. Olivet, KY. His will was made on 4 April 1812 and is recorded in Mason Co KY.
The children of ARCHIBOLD and Mary Wiggins were: Freelove, Joseph, Thomas, Philip, ARCHIBOLD, Benjamin F., Enoch, John, Matilda, Charity and Frances Asberry Wiggins.
Some sources claim that Benjamin F. and Enoch may not have been their sons. [Leonard Note: After a great deal of research and accumulation of voluminous material regarding the preceding Wiggins lineage we are reasonably certain that we are connect to it, but have not been able to establish a definitive link.]
[ However, we have traced our ancestory back to our great great great grandfather, John Wiggins, who was born before 1765 and appears in the Mason County census for 1800 and the Nicholas County census for 1810 and 1820. His will, dated 9 Aug 1824 in Nicholas County bequeathed to his wife, Sally, his plantation, three negro slaves, Gilbura, George and Agg and all of his stock and household furniture with the proviso that at her death, everything be divided equally between his two sons, William and ARCHIBOLD . The will was probated in 1828. ARCHIBOLD was born in Nicholas County in 1796 although the 1800 census shows his father as living in Mason County, KY. He died 9 May 1855] ....... "From some old records I find that Matilda's father, Archibald Wiggins, and his son, Archibald Wiggins Jr., belonged to Captain Wm. Reed's Company of Infantry of the 29th. Regiment of Kentucky Militia. This company was organized in Mason County for an expedition against the Indians of Ohio and Indiana, who continued to harass and threaten the safety of the settlers of Kentucky.
An article in an old newspaper found recently in tearing down an old house in Mason County, tells of the return of Capt. Reed's company Sept. 29th, 1803, and gives the names of the 62 members, including that of Capt. Reed, who afterward was a General in the War of 1812. The names of Archibald Wiggins and Archibald Wiffing Jr., are in the list. Some papers concerning Captain Reed's military record and probably an account of this expedition are in the archives of the Bourbon County D.A.R.'s and I suppose the same record is in the D.A.R.'s of Mason County, KY." ....... To Thomas I have given one hundred dollars. To Philip two hundred dollars. To Archebald, sixty dollars; To Frances Asberry [Wiggins - Ref: Mason Co Deed Bks. A-L, Abt. p. K20, #165]; to John, my son, I will and bequeath one hundred dollars and after the death of myself and Mary my wife, each child who is named and charged above is to have as much as Joseph and Phillip have received from me and after this is done, if anything of my estate remains those who are named and charged above are to receive an equal dividend, when one hundred dollars is taken out of what is left which sum of money I bequeath to Jeremiah Sales Lawson, grandson; My daughter Freelove not being mentioned among those who are charged, I will and bequeath to her as much as they have had and to have an equal share with them at the death of me and my wife Mary exclusive of the negro girl Sophie. [NFJ: This was probably handled this way because she is one of his youngest.]
I will and bequeath to George Dixon the land on which he now lives during his life and after his death I give it to his children by my daughter, Charity, as follows: Archebald Dixon, John Dixon, Sally Dixon, Thomas Dixon, James Dixon, Matilda Dixon and Joseph Dixon to be equally divided among them.
I likewise bequeath the property in dispute at Lebanon (if I gain it) to Jeremiah Lawson's children: William Bronauth Lawson, Patsy Slaughter Lawson, Mahala Lawson and Jeremiah Sales Lawson.
Lastly, I nominate and constitute my beloved wife, Mary, and my son, Joseph, and Archebald to be the Executors of this my last will and Testament here ratifying this and revoking all wills or testaments by me heretofore made. In witness of which I set my hand seal this fourth day of April Eighteen hundred twelve.
Archebald Wiggins (SEAL) Signed sealed and delivered in presence of: Charles B. Smith Frederick (his X mark) Groves Enoch M. Wiggins **
  • * [NFJ: I did not think that a child could witness a parent's will. Enoch has been named as a child by some, and dismissed by others. This, plus the fact that he is not named and/or his name mentioned, might be an indication that his position is incorrect.] ....... K Ancestors, V 14 #1:
