About Capt. (CSA) William H Murray
Civil War Confederate Army Officer. He served during the Civil War as Captain and commander of Company A, 2nd Maryland (CSA) Infantry Battalion. He lost his life during combat at the Battle of Gettysburg, when his unit was part of the early morning July 3, 1863 assult on Culp's Hill. Because he was his regiment's senior Captain, he commanded the troops on the unit's right wing. In the assault that was ultimately driven back by Union defenders, he was shot in the neck, mortally wounding him. This stone and its inscription are a cenotaph and memorial to the unit in which he served placed by the Murray Association, Captain Murray is buried at Christ Episcopal Church in West River ,Anne Arundle County ,Maryland with his brother Clapham Murray.
