About Capt. Edmund Scarburgh, Sr.

Neither he nor his son Col. Edmund Scarburgh ever had middle names. Some lazy researcher "tagged" them generations later to make it easier to tell them apart.

His death date is not certain, but his last recorded court appearance was in April 1634 and his wife, Hannah Scarburgh, was described as "widow" for a cattle sale in January 1635. She was also described as widow Scarburgh on 19 February 1634/35.

Capt. Edmund Scarburgh settled on lands lying along Magothy Bay, in Accomack, probably about 1628. His holding was patented by his son Edmund, 18 May 1637, when 200 acres were granted the latter.

Capt. Scarburgh was the first burgess from the "Eastern Shore," or the peninsula of Accomack, which was not a county until 1632, representing his section of the colony in the General Assembly of 1629. He was also a burgess in 1631 and 1631.

Edmund Scarburgh was resident in the parish of Saint Martins in the Fields in Westminster. The impetus for his journeying to Virginia may have come from his family connections through his wife's uncle Lording Barry to Edward Bennett of Bennett's Plantation; Barry was part-owner and captain of Bennett's ship the Edward of London (which was granted a letter of marque and reprisal in 1627).

Edmund's wife Hannah seems to've travelled to Virginia circa 1634/35, most likely on learning of her husband's death (the gap between Edmund Scarburgh's presumed death and his widow being recorded as selling cattle to a Captain Graves is sufficient to allow for news to travel to England and Hannah to've sailed to Virginia).
