About Capt. Freeborn Moulton

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/31512915/freeborn-moulton

Freeborn Moulton was born 3 Apr 1717 in Windom, Coventry, Connecticut. He died 9 Jun 1792 in So, Brimfield, Hampden Co, Massachusetts.

He came to this Town [Wales] before his marriage, first located upon the "Alvin Needham Place" South West of the Town; staid there a few years; then removed to the South-P. of Monson; there remained and died. There is an unwritten story, which may be taken as truth or fiction, as the reader please, that while his parents were crossing the briny Ocean to this country he was born and was named at the time, "Freeborn" because born outside the acknowledged dominions of any earthly potentatious sovereign. Can proffer nothing more accumulatively of his history.

(note attached from unknown source): The above is erroneous. He was son of Robert, fourth in line from Robert Salem 1630.

WHAT OTHERS SAY: "Freeborns' parents moved to South Brimfield, Mass. when Freeborn was a small boy. South Brimfield was later set off as the town of Wales. When Freeborn married Rebekah Walker in 1737, he settled first in the southwest part of Wales and later moved to what would become Monson, Mass. Their residence was on a highland in southwest Monson which became known as Moulton Hill. Here he ran a sawmill and a store near his home. In 1774 he became active in the upcoming revolutionary war by joining a "committee of correspondence" which helped keep the various communities informed of the events and plans pertaining to the colonies preparations for action against England. After the First Continental Congress met in 1774 and called for the formation of a militia made up of 12,000 men, of whom one third were to be "minute-men", the records show that Freeborn became the captain of the group from Monson. When war broke out in 1775 at Lexington and Concord, Freeborn gathered his minute-men and marched to Cambridge, Mass. After two weeks in Cambridge while the seige of Boston was planned, Freeborn was sent back to Monson. He did not re-enlist in the army but stayed active throughout the war and helped recruit and hire soldiers for the conflict. Freeborn died at the age of 75 years, two months, and six days. He died before the Moulton Hill Cemetery was opened and his burial place is unknown.
