His total holdings on Indian Creek was over 2180 acres. When his mother's second husband died, he was left 300 acres in the area known as Bullpasture. James moved to what is now Union, Monroe County, WV where he constructed a blockhouse. The house was destroyed in the Pontiac War of 1763. Hebuilt another blockhouse south of Union in 1770, where he died in 1812.
Pontiac was an Ottawa chief who rallied Indian forces to attack practically every British port between the Straits of Mackinac and western New York. James was also a veteran of Lord Dunmore's war in 1774, serving in the company of Captain John Lewis, son of General Andrew Lewis. Ironically, it was General Lewis who was later credited with origin Lord Dunmore our of Virginia during the Revolution. The Delaware, Wyan, Shawnee and Cayuga Itoquois tribes raided settlements in the lower Ohio Valley. Lord Dunmore, the British Colonial Governor of Virginia, sent troops to quell the uprising. The conflict culminated with the Battle of Point Pleasant on October 10, 1774,where 3000 soldiers defeated 1000 Indians. James was also listed as a non-military patriot in the American Revolution.
