  • During World War One, James served as the captain of Company E, 105th Infantry Regiment, 53rd Brigade, 27th Division. From his obituary in the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle, Tuesday, November 5, 1918, page 4:
    • "News of the death in action of Captain James Stacey Slosson, of the 108th Infantry [sic], in the drive of September 30th, is contained in letters received by relatives today. Captain Slosson, a native of Geneva, attended Hobart College and was for a time a member of Company B. After leaving college he went to New York City and while there served in the Seventh Regiment. He returned to Geneva and for a time was connected with the Geneva Automobile Company.
    • "He enlisted as a private in Company B on October 14, 1904, and was dropped September 30, 1907. He was again taken up on January 4, 1909, and was granted an honorable discharge on April 20, 1909, in order to be commissioned a second lieutenant. He received his honorable discharge on May 24, 1910, and soon afterwards returned to New York. At the outbreak of the war he entered a training camp and won his commission as captain and soon afterwards was assigned to the 108th Infantry [sic]."
  • NOTE: Although his obituary noted that James served in the 108th Infantry Regiment, the inscription on his grave-marker in France states that he was a captain in the 105th Infantry, 27th Division. In addition, he is listed in the roster of the 105th Infantry at https://dmna.ny.gov/historic/reghist/wwi/infantry/105thInf/105thInf...

  • NOTE: Although his grave-marker inscription states that he died on 27 September 1918, his brother Henry Lawrence Slosson wrote a certified note in the passport application of James' wife Annette, in which Henry stated that James was "killed in action on Sept. 29th, 1918 in France." (see https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-9981-731D-2?i=643&...). And, a notice in the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle, Rochester, N.Y., Tuesday, November 26, 1918, page 13 stated that, "Official confirmation of the death of Captain James Stacey Slosson has been received by his mother, Mrs. Harry L. Slosson. Captain Slosson met his death in action in the Hindenburg drive on September 29th."
