To avoid confusion with his cousin, also named John Cook, he was known as "John Cook, black" in reference to his dark complexion,
while his cousin was referred to as "Whitehead" (prematurely white-haired?)
John Cook, also known as Capt. John, was born ca 1652 at Portsmouth, R.I, and died probably in October, 1727 in Tiverton (then in Massachusetts, but now part of Rhode Island. He was the son of Captain Thomas and Thomasin (____) Cook]] [1]
He married Mary Havens, the daughter of William and Dennis Havens of Portsmouth, R.I. He was a surveyor, and owned considerable land in that town. [1] Around 1692 he moved "across the river" to Pocasset, now Tiverton. To avoid confusion with his cousin, also named John Cook, he was known as "John Cook, black" in reference to his dark complexion, while his cousin was referred to as "Whitehead" (prematurely white-haired?)[1].
In 1697 he was a constable, a law official below that of sheriff. As was the case in Portsmouth, he wound up owning considerable real estate in Tiverton, including two of the so-called "great lots" [1]
