1. John McMurtry 1738 or 1748, b. ca. 1738 or 1748, d. 22 October 1790 at Old Chilicothe, Ohio, he was killed in Harmer’s Defeat in 1790.

In his essay, "Six Contemporary John McMurtries" David C McMurtry says

'Captain John McMurtry ... died on October 22, 1790 in battle at Harmer's Defeat and was buried in a trench on the banks of the Maumee River in Allen County, Indiana near the present site of Fort Wayne.' Captain John McMurtry

John McMurtry was probably born in Pennsylvania or Virginia. His parents were Alexander McMurtry and Sarah Todd. His father died when he was young and his mother married James Young in about 1751 in Augusta County, Virginia. John married Mary Todd Hutton, daughter of James Hutton and Mary Todd, in about 1770. They had thirteen children. His brother, Samuel, married Jane Martin and they had six children. John's family moved to Kentucky in 1780. John fought in the Kentucky Militia and was killed in 1790 in battle called Harmer's Defeat. Descendants and relatives lived mainly in Kentucky and Indiana.
