This Branch of the GENI Tree needs some major work and documentation added to it.

Spelling of name is

  • Irish spelling=McMurtry,
  • Scottish spelling=McMurtrie.
  • McMurty

The name McMurtrie means "son of a sea navigator" and it is also recorded as meaning "sea warrior". In the original Gaelic, it was spelled MacMuirceartach.

The McMurtry's are not a clan but a sept of the clan Stewart of Bute. A sept was a group of people who allied together for political reasons and were allowed to wear the tartan of the clan to which they were attached.

In Scotland about the year 1062 during the reign of Malcolm Ceanmor, surnames were adopted by royal edict.

The Historical Research Society of Scotland says that McMurtry was also a variant of MacKirdie. "Mac" means 'son of.' In Scotland, McMurtries are most numerous in Ayrshire and Lanarkshire on the west coast. The Historical Research Society also says that as a surname, McMurtry dates back to the early 16th century; we find Gilbert Mackmurtye as a witness in Edinburgh in 1508 and William M'Mowtrie as a soldier in Edinburgh in 1684.

This McMurtry branch ties heavily into the McKee's and Todd ancestry as well as the McPheeter's and the McPheeter's also ies back into the McKee ancestry - it becomes a very tangled web.

Samuel Alexander McMurtry

There are 63+ trees for him on the MyHeritage side and they are split between a death date of 1750 & 1755.
which state that Joseph Mcmurtrie (Mcmurtry), Ann Mcmurtrie (born Boone) are his parents

Pamela McMurtray Berg writes the following:

Joseph McMurtrie, Jr. & Ann McMurtry are not the parents of this Samuel Alexander McMurtry. His parents are unknown, & it is not clear whether they may have come from Ireland, Scotland, Wales or England. His DNA haplotype is distinctly different from Joseph's & his brothers' DNA, but it is thought that he may be a cousin to Joseph & his brothers Thomas & Robert, who settled in Warren, Sussex County, N.J.
One other conjecture is that he immigrated to America from Wales, but may have come from Ayrshire, Scotland via Ireland to Wales. The reasoning behind this last statement is that there are absolutely no records in Scotland, Ireland or England for his birth or those of who may be his father. Wales is a complicated nation & the keeping of records not as forthright, so he or his father may have been born there; though it is commonly thought that Alexander was born & died in Augusta, Botecourt County, VA. Birth records were not kept there until some years later when the first Presbyterian church was built there & began to record life events, including births, baptisms, marriages & deaths.
It is also commonly believed also that he married Sarah (Todd ?), sister or cousin of Mary Todd, who was married to Samuel Hutton & they were the parents of Mary Todd Hutton, wife of Captain John McMurtry, another son of Alexander & Sarah.
After Alexander died, Sarah married James Young, & together they raised John & his brother Samuel.
Samuel & Jean Martin & their young children migrated to Harrods Station with his brother John & wife & children (to that point; other children born at Harrod's Station), which is in Mercer/Franklin Counties, Kentucky Territory, State of Virginia, as well with Samel Hutton & wife Mary Todd., parents of Capt. John's wife, Mary Todd Hutton.
A cousin Alexander, a son of either Thomas or Robert McMurtry (brothers of Joseph), also immigrated with the brothers to the Kentucky Territory thru the Cumberland Gap.
John was the Captain & leader of the community at Harrod's Station & lead the men during the American Revolution, fighting both the British & Native Americans. He died after the Revolutionary War in The Battle At Harmer's Defeat in present day Indiana. He was injured & laid by the side of the path & found scalped by the Indians when after the battle the dead & injured were gathered.

I'm sorry. The 1st link above was supposed to be a link to: [Franklin County Genealogical & Historical Society website "The Franklin County Genealogical Record Of The McMurtry Family ..." That link does not copy as it's a protected book, but you can Google it & add it to your Book List for free. It's a short document as books go, so it's not like you will be reading reams of material. I hope you find it informational & that it answers some questions regarding your McMurtry ancestors.
