Captain John Phillips, eldest son of Judge Theophilus and Elizabeth (Betts) Phillips, was born at Maidenhead, New Jersey, about 1721. In 1760 he married Abigail Tindall, and had the following children :
- Thomas,
- Joseph,
- John,
- William.
He was an officer in the Continental line, and captain of the First Regiment, Hunterdon County Militia, Revolutionary War, and was guide to Washington at the battle of Trenton. This regiment was in the brigade of General Dickinson, and participated in the battles of Trenton, Assanpink, Princeton, Germantown, Springfield and Monmouth.
Family
Abigail Tindall was the daughter of Joseph Tindall and Mercy Hart.
She married John Phillips, born 18 November 1721 and died 1794, son of Theophilus Phillips & Elizabeth Betts.
Colonial and Revolutionary Families of Pennsylvania lists Elizabeth as mother to Keziah, not Abigail, however, History of History of Richard and Francina (Hart) Phillips did not list any children from this union. [4, 5]
