About Capt. Joseph Douglass, Jr.

Joseph DOUGLAS Jr.

Name - I have seen it reported by many researchers that Joseph Jr., son of Joseph Douglas Sr. (1676-1756) of

Charles Co., MD, had a middle name of "Hamilton". However, I have seen no documentation of this middle name for Joseph Douglas Jr. A Joseph Hamilton Douglas married a Rachel Bayard in Baltimore Co., MD in 1768. But I have seen no proof that this Joseph Hamilton Douglas was a son of Joseph Douglas Sr. of Charles Co., MD. Joseph Douglas of Caroline Co., MD was appointed Captain on 14 May 1776.

Birth - date from the website of Frank Collins of Fort Mill, SC, www.collinsfactor.com.

1754/1757 - identified as "son Joseph Douglas" in the will of his father, Joseph Douglas; written 7 Jul 1754. Joseph inherited "Smiths Fortune", 25 acres in Charles Co., MD; & 2 "young negros, James & Hannah", from his father; will probated 21 Jun 1757. [Note: Since Joseph was a minor, he probably did not take possession until he was 21 - @1768.] Charles County Wills, Liber 30, folio 274.

1761 - identified as "brother Joseph Douglas" in the will of his half-brother, John Douglas; written 6 Jul 1761. Joseph was to inherit 1/7 of John's estate; will probated 9 Dec 1761. Charles County Wills, Liber 31, folio 487.

1766/ 1768 - identified as "son Joseph Douglas" in the will of his mother, Catherine Douglas; written 19 May 1766.

Joseph was named executor & was to inherit "negroes Quam & Winnes", silver spoons, & remainder of estate; will probated 9 May 1768. Charles Co., MD Wills.

1768 - Joseph, along with his half brother Thomas Harris, executed the will of their mother, Catherine Douglas; 7 Jun 1768. Charles County Wills.

1768 - A Joseph Hamilton Douglass married a Rachel Bayard in St. Paul's Parish, Baltimore Co. on 4 Apr 1768. "St. Paul's Parish Records, 1700-1800", pg 53. And the couple had 1 child, George Crispin, 2 Jan 1769. "Maryland Marriages, 1634-1777", Barnes; & "St. Paul's Parish Records". I have not seen documentation or proof that this Joseph Hamilton Douglas was a son of Joseph Douglas & Catherine Musgrave.

Marriage - Joseph Douglas to Rebecca Nichols. "The Douglas Family of Charles County, MD", article by Dr. Neil D. Thompson in "The American Genealogist", Vol 49, No 4, Oct 1973, pg 193-202.

1773 - Caroline County, MD created in 1773 from Dorchester & Queen Anne Counties, MD.

1775-1778 Census - William & Mary Parish, Upper Hundred, Charles Co., MD - Joseph Douglas. "Maryland Records - Colonial, Revolutionary, County & Church from Original Sources" by Gais Marcus Brumbaugh, 1915, Vol I, pg 301.

Military Service - Revolutionary War; appointed Captain 14 May 1776; 14th Battalion of Caroline Co., MD. Maryland Archives, Vol 11, pg 424.

1777 - owned "St. George's Regulation", 319 acres in Caroline Co., MD; 6 Aug 1777. Caroline County Land Records, Liber A, folio 254.

1781-1783 - Justice of the Peace for Caroline Co., MD. Maryland Archives, Vol 48, pg 45, 223, 341.

1783 - Charles Co., MD Tax Assessment - Joseph Douglas, 188 acres.

1783 - Lower Choptank District Hundred, Caroline Co., MD Tax Assessment - Joseph Douglass, St. Georges

Regulation, 369 acres. Maryland Archives, MSA S 1437. [Note: Did Joseph own land in both counties? Or was the land owned by different 2 Joseph Douglass? The 1790 Census has a Joseph in both Caroline & Charles County.]

1786 - owned 100 acres in Caroline Co, MD; 30 Dec 1786. Caroline County Land Records, Liber B, folio 202.

1790 Census - Caroline Co., MD - Joseph Douglass: 1 male over 16 (Joseph, 43); 3 males under 16 (Thomas, 15; Joseph, 6; John); 4 females (wife Rebecca, 40; Elizabeth, 12; Mary, 10; ? ). [Note: There is also a Joseph Douglass in Charles Co., MD: 1 male over 16, 1 male under 16 & 6 females. It is quite possible that this Joseph Douglass of Charles Co. is the Joseph who was assessed for 188 acres in 1783; & the Joseph Douglas counted in the 1775-1778 Census in William & Mary Parish.]

1790-1794 - member of the Maryland House of Delegates for Caroline Co. Maryland Archives, Historical List in new series, Vol 1.

1791 - appointed Justice of Caroline Co., MD; 2 Dec

1791. Maryland Archives, Vol 72, pg 239.

1800 Census - Caroline Co., MD - Joseph Douglass: 1 male 0-10 (Jeremiah, 8); 1 male 10-16 (John, 10); 2 males 16-26 (Thomas, 25; Joseph, 16); 1 male 45+ (Joseph, 53); 1 female 10-16 ( ? ); 1 female 16-26 ( ? ); 1 female 45+ (Rebecca, 50).

1800/ 1801 - member of Maryland House of Delegates for Caroline Co.; 5 Nov 1800. Maryland Archives, Vol 92, pg 4.

1810 Census - Caroline Co., MD - Joseph Douglas: 1 male, 10-16 (grandson Daniel Robinson, 11); 1 male 16-26 (son, probably Jeremiah, 18); 1 male, 45+ (Joseph, 63) ; 1 female 0-10 (granddaughter, Rebecca Robinson, 9); 1 female 16-26 ( ? ); 1 female 26-45 (daughter Mary Robinson, ); 1 female 45+ (wife Rebecca, 60); 13 slaves. [Note: Living next door to Joseph & Rebecca, is Rebecca's mother Mary Nicols.]

Death - "Joseph Douglas of Old died 1 Jan 1810." Bible of John Douglas & Thomas Smoot as transcribed in "

Daughters of the American Revolution Magazine", Jan-Dec 1932, pg 673. [Note: the year 1810 is obviously a typo error for 1816. Joseph was recorded in the 1810 Census; & Joseph did not sign his will until Dec 1811, a will that was probated 30 Jan 1816.

Will - Caroline Co., MD - written 30 Dec 1811, probated 30 Jan 1816.
