Captain Joseph Weld (1599–1646), the youngest of the three Weld immigrants, is the ancestor from whom the richest and most famous Welds descend.[2] As an award for his participation in the Pequot War of 1637 and subsequent negotiations, the colonial legislature granted Weld 278 acres (1.13 km2) in the town of Roxbury.

Captain Weld's land is now much of present day Jamaica Plain. With the wealth generated from this grant, Joseph Weld became one of the first donors to Harvard and founded the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Massachusetts.

Thomas Weld's involvement with Harvard was the beginning of almost 400 years of association between that institution and the Weld Family.

Surprisingly, the first Weld to attend ended his Harvard career in disgrace. John Weld (born in 1625) and a classmate stole money and gunpowder from two houses and were caught. Henry Dunster (Harvard’s first president) personally whipped them and expelled them from the school. Weld returned to England and became a minister in Durham.

Edmund Weld (1631–1668)(son of Thomas, the first Weld to graduate Harvard (class of 1650) left Massachusetts Bay Colony as well. He became a minister in Ireland At least eighteen more Weld family members have graduated Harvard since then and two prominent buildings at Harvard University are named for the family.

  • FIRST GENERATION
• No. 1. EDMUND [1] WELD, b in Sudbury, Suffolk County England in 1559; made his will in Sudbury 5 Dec. 1605, which was probated 5 May 1608; m before 1585 AMY BREWSTER (some say DERESLEYE). He was evidently a very prosperous cloth merchant in Sudbury, into which town weavers had been introduced by Edward III. The town was on its way to becoming the center of the cloth industry in Suffolk County, a prominence it attained completely after the Restoration. Edmund Weld invested the savings from his business in lands, as his will shows. He was prominent in the councils of the Borough, of which we find him "Bailiff" 5 Sept. 1597, (Calendar of the Muniments of the Borough of Sudbury, printed in the Proceedings of the Suffolk Institute of Archeology, Vol. 13, Town Book). He was a son of Thomas Weld, a draper in Sudbury.

JOSEPH {2} WELD (Edmund [1]) b in Sudbury Suffolk County, England about 1598; d 7 Oct. 1646; buried in Eustice Street Burial Ground, Roxbury, Mass., m (1) at All Saints Church in Sudbury, ELIZABETH WYSE; she was buried in Oct. 1638 in Roxbury. Joseph m (2) BARBARA CLAPP 20 Apr. 1639 in Roxbury, niece of Edward and Prudence Clappe of Dorchester, Mass. and probably dau. of Nicholas; she was b in England and d 15 Aug. 1655 in Boston; she m (2) Anthony Stoddard of Boston about or soon after 24 Aug. 1647.
• Capt. Joseph arrived in America in 1635 accompanied by his wife, Elizabeth, and children: his oldest son John [3] did not come until 1638.
• Capt. Joseph settled at Roxbury upon arrival and became householder and proprietor of the town; he was a man of high reputation, very conspicuous in the early history of the colony and reputed to have been the wealthiest merchant of his day in New England. He kept a store on Roxbury Street and lived opposite his brother, Rev. Thomas. Capt Joseph Weld was freeman 3 Mar. 1636.
• He was deputy to the General Court, 1636-44; Selectman of Roxbury prior to 1641, and Representative, 1635-45; he was very prominent in military affairs. He became a member and was chosen first Ensign of the Artillery Company of Boston at it organization in 1633, the first Monday in June, his name stands third on the roll. He was the first Captain of the Rosbury Military Company in 1636; it was included in the regiment of which John Winthrop was Colonel. Capt Joseph was a valuable aid to Gov. Winthrop and served in numerous fights with the Indians, as well as being one of the Commissioners to make a treaty of peace with the Pequot.
• Capt. Joseph made many trips to England on business and prospered. He was one of the first donors to Harvard College.
• Joseph Weld and his brother, Rev. Thomas, were in sympathy with the opponents of the celebrated Mrs. Ann Hutchinson, the first mentioned was ordered by the Court to keep her in custody previous to her exile. It is said that she remarked, that she could not have been treated with more respect and kindness had she been a guest in his home. The Apostle Eliot, his particular friend says that the Captain died of cancer of the throat and jaws.

The names of Hannah and Susannah have been often interchanged in the old records, therefore as the widow, Susannah Hooker has not been identified she might well have been Hannah Weld.

• Rev. Thomas Weld was the first Weld that ever crossed the water to the shores of America. He came from England on board the ship William Francis, June 5th, 1632, and landed at Boston, Mass. Joseph Weld, his brother, came the following year. They settled in Roxbury, Mass.
• Rev. Thomas Weld was settled over the church in Roxbury the same year he came from England. In 1648 Joseph Weld's daughter Mary married Daniel Harris of Middletown, Conn.
• My next information is that my great grandfather, Daniel Weld, married Miss Mary Warren, sister to Gen. Joseph Warren, who fell in battle at Bunker Hill. .... etc. ________________________________

Death: 7 Oct 1646 in Roxbury MA of cancer "Captain Joseph Weld, immigrant ancestor, was born in England about 1600. He came to New England with his wife Elizabeth, daughter Elizabeth, aged ten; Mary, aged eight, Hannah, aged six, and Thomas, leaving in England an elder son John, who came later. He was admitted a freeman March 3, 1636. He settled in Roxbury, Massachusetts, and became a house-holder, proprietor of the town, and captain of the military company. He was selectman for a number of years and deputy to the general court in 1637 and afterward. He was of good estate and high repute, we are told."26

Joseph settled in Roxbury, MA in 1635. He was representative to the General Court 1637 to 1645.

[This has been disproven. He married Elizabeth Wise/Wyse] On 11 Oct 1620 Joseph first married Elizabeth Shatswell, daughter of John Shatswell & Judith [Shatswell], in Sudbury, Suffolk, Eng. Born ca 1600. Elizabeth died in Oct 1638. Buried on 16 Oct 1638 in Roxbury, MA.25

Lambert mentions the first Weld to attend Harvard and the first to graduate, but neither was the first with significant Harvard ties. Captain Joseph Weld, reputedly the richest person in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, was among the first donors to the College.
