Capt. Joseph Whiting

Joseph Whiting was born on 2 Oct 1645 in Hartford, Connecticut and died on 8 Oct 1717 in New Haven, Connecticut; he is buried in the Crypt at Center Church on the Green, New Haven, Connecticut.

He was the son of Maj. William Whiting and Susanna Wiggin.

He first married Mary Pynchon of Springfield, Massachusetts, on October 5, 1669; His second wife was Anna Allyn, daughter of Colonel John and Anna (Smith) Allyn of Hartford.  

Joseph was a merchant, first of Westfield, Massachusetts , later of Hartford , whither he returned about the time of King Philip 's war. He was treasurer of th colony of Connecticut from 1678 until his death, a period of thirty-nine years. His son John succeeded him in this office and held it for thirty-two years. He was a wealthy and distinguished citizen. (Sources: - 2 (records 376-395) )

A resident of Hartford, he is reported to have died in New Haven while attending a session of the General Assembly meeting at the statehouse. "his estate owed “a considerable sum of money” to the state treasury; parcels of his land were sold off by his wife Anna and son John to pay off these arrears." (2)
