Moses was the first member of the fourth generation of Broyles' in America. The eldest child of the eldest child of emigrant John Broyles of German descent. Moses was born in 1755 in Culpeper County, son of Adam Broyles and wife Mary. His birth was 38 years after his grandfather and great grandfather came to the New World in the ship "Scott" and ended up in Virginia.

Although it is documented Moses was born in Culpeper County, the location of the Broyles' land after they left the area of the Germanna Colony in 1925, he would have been born in the White Oak/Robinson River area. This is now part of Madison County as Madison was formed from a part of Culpeper in 1749.

Moses married Barbara Carpenter in abt 1776 (25 Feb 1757 - 17 Dec 1836), daughter of William C Carpenter (Zimmerman) and Mary Wilhite. Barbara outlived Moses by many years. Moses died 1803 at age 48 in Madison County.

Moses and Barbara Carpenter had the following children:

  1. 1) William (1780 - 1823 Jefferson, KY), md Betsy Wilhoit in 1800 (1782-aft 1842 KY)
  2. 2) James (1782-1851) md Nancy Taylor, then Ann Wilhoite. [Stayed in Madison County.]
  3. 3) Elizabeth (abt 1785 - bef 1804), md James T Ford of Madison in 1802 (abt 1783- 1805) [Stayed in Madison]
  4. 4) Anna (1787-bef 1805)
  5. 5) Nancy (1791 - 1875 Howard, MO), md. 1811 to Humphrey Taylor in Madison (1788-1870 MO)

Moses attended the Hebron Church, entered land in Kentucky (which he did not claim), and lived and died in Madison, where he was a farmer. He also was a member of class #76 liable for military service in the Revolutionary War, but was not drafted. The details of any active service has not been found.

What is most important to Moses' descendants is he lived and died in Madison County, VA. The only uncles who did not go to South Carolina (in what is now Tennessee), was Zacharias (md Delilah Clore) and John (md. Margaret Utz) who lived in Madison County. It was said, John was murdered in Madison. Peter did not go to Tennessee, but left for West Virginia. It appears Moses had no siblings who stayed in Madison, but he does still has descendants who live in Madison.

FAMILY MOVES TO TENNESSEE: It was around the 1780's time frame when Moses' parents, Adam Broyles and Mary Wilhoit, left Virginia for South Carolina (now in East Tennessee), as did his uncles Nicholas, Cyrus, Jacob, Michael, Matthias, and Aunt Elizabeth (m. Conrad Wilhite). Sister Anne (m. Hugh Brown) went to Missouri. Sister Jemima went to Tennessee, then South Carolina, and on to Georgia (married Joseph Brown). Brother Joshua went to Tennessee then on to South Carolina. Either Moses did not accompany his father to Tennessee or later returned to Madison, Virginia.

HIGHLIGHTS OF MOSES' LIFE:

  • 1777 - On communion rolls of Hebron Church.
  • 1782 - Named eldest son and executor in father's will. Inherits 200 acres of father's land on the south side of the Little Limestone,Washington Co, Tenn.
  • 1786 - Capt. Moses Broyles and wife Barbary sell 5 acres to M Snyder in Culpeper Co., Va.
  • 1789 - He transfers execution of father's will to "trusty friend John Shields" as Moses had not followed his father to Tennessee.
  • 1797 - Moses is granted 800 acres in Hardin Co., KY. Did not follow through.
  • 1805 - Moses' property is redistributed, wife Barbara - 117 acres. The rest divided into 4 45&1/2 acre sections.
  • 1830 - Barbara sells 88 acres to son James Broyles.

MOSES DEATH: In the later years Moses was taxed on 299 acres in Madison. When he died, wife Barbara got 117 acres, and the rest is divided up into four equal sections of 45.5 acres. The remaining slaves are to be divided into 4 parts, one to William, one to James, one to Nancy, and one to Patty (?) and Elizabeth Wayland Ford. Daughter Anna is not mentioned, and may have died before his will.

Although Moses attended the Hebron Church in Madison, he is not buried there. At that time there were many family burial sites on their land, which has since been destroyed.

NOTES: Locations changed names as more counties were added: Essex County formed in 1692, Spotsylvania came from part of Essex 1721, Orange from part of Spotsylvania 1734, Culpeper from part of Orange 1749, Madison from part of Culpeper in 1749.

"Tracking Andrew Fox", James H Fox, 2012 provides much detail on the Broyles' family and their trip to Tennessee, as Andrew Fox traveled with Broyles family.
