About Capt. Phillip Null, Sr.

A Patriot of the American Revolution for PENNSYLVANIA with the rank of PRIVATE. DAR Ancestor # A085228

Philip was a Revolutionary War Soldier. On Christmas Day, Dec 25, 1776 he crossed the Delaware River with Geoge Washington (although in a different boat). The story goes that Philip yelled at a soldier to get out of his way as he was boarding his boat and that soldier turned out to be George Washington who only smiled.

The next day they defeated the Hessians at the battle of Trenton.

He was with George Washington when the British surrendered at Yorktown, VA in 1781.

In 1782, Washington sent Philip to NC to put down a Tory uprising. He was captured and had his throat slit open. He was left for dead. But the Beauchamp family found him and took care of him.

Later that year he married Margaret Beauchamp.

He traded his officer script for 1600 acres of land in what is now West Virginia -- around the Poca River in Kanawha Co. He discovered coal deposits in the land in 1790. He moved and lived there in 1803.

He died of cholera in 1834 on his way to visit his son, Henry.
