He fought in the Civil War with the New York State Militia and was shot through the lung rendering it useless for the rest of his life. He was aide-de-camp to General Marsena R. Patrick. After the war, he became a member of the New York Stock Exchange, enjoying a successful career. He married and had two children.

Private, Company G, 2nd Pennsylvania Infantry[19th PA Inf], April 27, 1861, discharged August 8, 1861. Enrolled on April 28, 1862, at Aquia Creek, Virginia, for three years as Second Lieutenant, Company E, 20th New York State Militia. On August 29, 1862, while serving as aide-de-camp on the staff of General Marsena R. Patrick, he was severely wounded. John was shot through the body, the ball entered the left lung, passing out the back on the edge of the shoulder blade, leaving the lung almost entirely useless for the remainder of his life. He was captured on August 29, 1862 and exchanged November 8, 1862. Mustered as 2nd Lieutenant January 7, 1863, First Lieutenant, Company K, 20th N.Y.S.M., March 6, 1863 and discharged, October 5, 1863, Bouvier was promoted by brevet, to the rank of Captain, U.S.V., from March 13, 1865.
John V. Bouvier was the great grandfather of Jacqueline Lee Bouvier, wife of President John F. Kennedy.
Note* Although John's gravestone shows his middle name as Vernon,an error was made in cutting the stone. Numerous sources including his family history, titled The Bouviers, by John H. Davis, attest to his middle name being Vernou.
